I am trying to install a Linksys 10/100 LAN card in a IBM Aptiva computer, everything goes OK, the driver is installed, the computer is rebooted, I look in Device Manager under Network Adapters and the only thing there is Dial-Up Adapter, where did LNE 100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (LNE100TX v4) go ????

    POSSIBLE cause of problem.

Do you have an Internal PCI Modem. Or some ISA Modems will do the same.

If so you MAY not get the NIC to install. The modem will block it by not allowing PCI Steering to work properly.

If indeed you do have a PCI modem you might take it out and get then NIC to install. But then you may not get the Modem to re-install.

Known cure for this problem if it exists. Get and external Serial Port Modem.

I can fully document that. I just had to do it yesterday.

Plus I myself have never used anything other than Externals and have not had this problem.

Also the NIC may be in the DM under OTHER with a yellow mark which means the drivers did not install.

    LAN Card

This Aptiva only has ONE PCI slot. Device Manager doesn't show OTHER. The LAN Card will be used to connect to a cable modem.
After playing with the install for another hour I notice Linksys is now listed under Network adapters in Device Manager, HOWEVER it has a red X on it, which I guess means it isn't installed. Every time I try to install it mannually, it tells me it is PNP and to reboot it. I have done this MANY times, most of the time it can't the driver on the floppy, and I know it is there I'ved looked at it, it is at A:\win95\Linksys LNE100TX............................v4.inf, why don't it see it ????.

This Aptiva only has ONE PCI slot.

Do you mean there is only one PCI slot or only one slot free ?

Also does that machine have an intergrated ( built in ) Modem.

Wait for some one else who has a similiar machine to reply but , I believe you may need to disable the existing Modem before the card will install.

How you go about disabling the existing I do not know for sure. There are several different ways. I guess it depends on the machine.

When you boot up does it come to the screen that tells you it had detected new hardware and will install the drivers for it? If so, does it fail to find them and then ask you to tell it where they are? If so do you browse the A: drive and highlight the .INF folder? That should work from all the times I have had any experience with it. You DO have to rub its nose in it sometimes.

If you've done all that correctly, go to Device Manager and click on the red cross you mentioned and get the details such as Resource conflicts or whatever it says.

It might help to start Windows in safe mode, go into Device Manager and remove all instances of the NIC. Reboot normally and try reinstalling the drivers again.

I removed everything for the 100th time and rebooted but this time it let me install it. I have the driver (Linksys) and the protacol (TCP/IP & NetBEUI) installed now but I can't see the Cable modem(can't get online). Computer "A" setting beside it is configered just like it and it works fine.

Verify tcp/ip protocol is bound to nic.

Glad to hear you were able to get it to install :D

Check the TCP/IP protocol as Zephyr suggested.

You say the other system can see the modem - are you plugging the modem directly into the NIC or into a router/hub?

Also, check Device Manager to see which resources the NIC is using, is it sharing an IRQ with anything? And, (assuming your system provides an IRQ assignment listing on startup - it may not) is the IRQ Windows assigns to the NIC the same IRQ the BIOS is assigning on startup?

    Im reading between the lines here so bare with me;

Are you trying to connect both machines to the moden at the same time through a hub? If you are that wont work, The Modem will only give out one IP address unless you have requested 2 IP's from your ISP. The other option would be to purchase a DSL/Cable Modem Router/Switch (like a Linksys) www.linksys.com

Second, If you are trying to connect only one machine more than likely your ISP will need to change their records to allow the MAC (also known as the phisical address) of the new machine permission to use the Modem.
Most ISP's will only allow one MAC address to use the modem hence the reason for a cable/DSL router.

I think up have come up with it, TCP/IP is not bond to NIC. Computer "A" is bond (TCP/IP.>Linksys LNE100TX................. and that computer works fine, my question is how do I bond the 2 on system "B "

    General information:
    I have 2 computers 1 foot apart, I have a NETGEAR HUB EN104tp.
The cable modem is connected to the UpLink port of the hub and Puter "A" is connected to port 2 and putrer "B" is connected to port 3, share files and share printers are turned on on both systems, it took me a while to figure all this out but they both work fine now.

Next, a frind has a computer, Aptiva, that looks like it may have had a virus, he ask me to look at it, I take out my puter "B" and put the Aptiva in its place, I get it running again after reloading Win98, now I decide to take the NIC out of Puter "B" and put it into the Aptiva so I can get on line with it to run some online virus scanns.

And that is where I am today. If I knew how to do the bonding that Zephyr is talking about that would probably fix my problem.

    Thanks for all the help
    Fred
P.S. I am running Win98se on puter "A" and Win98 on the Aptiva

The normal procedure is to provide an additional TCP/IP and it will automatically be bonded to your NIC. That all takes place in Control Panel > Network and add the necessary component.

    I GIVE UP

I have worked on this thing for a week, off and on, I tried everything a dozen times. I got fixed what I wanted to fix, I just couldn't get on line to do a virus scan. I pulled out the Aptiva and installed my system "B ", boot up and it works fine.
    Thanks for all the help.

If you want to be nice to your friend, download AVG FREE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It sounds like he might need it.

It's only 5 megs and has free updates. Did I mention that it's FREE! :)

You'll have to download it to disk and then use Winzip or similar to span it to multiple diskettes. If you don't have Winzip, it's available as shareware at their web site.
