I have my desktop organized as I like it.

Reboot ---- everything is on the left side columns instead of organized my way

Why and what I can I do about it?

I checked PCWORLD downloads and found SMD that "SavesMyDesktop ". Downloaded it and it works great.

Run it and the then if things get messed up, run it again

Right click on the desktop and choose "Arrange icons by ". Make sure Auto Arrange is not ticked. Then tick the "lock the desktop" if you have links there. I also untick the desktop clean up wizard, because every so many days it will determine for you what you are using, and what you are not.

Unfortunately, Johanna, there is no "lock the desktop ". There is a line for "lock web items on desktop" and that was not clear as to whether it would lock EVERYTHING.

The Pcworld items does it very nicely as long as I will remember to use it if I change things.

    Icons - Lock on Desktop

"In Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP you can lock down the position of the Desktop icons using a couple of files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit. Download Layout.zip from here

Place Layout.dll here: C:\Winnt\System32 then double click the Layout.reg file. You will now have a new right click option on My Computer and Recycle Bin (?) - Save/Restore Desktop Icon Layout.

    Works fine for me.

Thanks. Having just a DLL on the system is better than a whole app that I d/l from PCWORLD. Both work and the PCWORLD one may also work for other than XP
    )
I must remember to reinstall that if I reinstall XP (horrors !!)

I just right click on the Desktop and select " Arrange Icons by " and check Align to Grid and nothing ever moves from where I put it.

Show Desktop items is the only other thing check.

But I dont want to "align to grid" -

I have blocks of folders and apps in different locations depending on what they do.

The way you do it it could not work.

But I can not verify same as I have nothing on the Desktop other than the 4 or 5 that Windows puts there.

Every thing is in the approriate folder and in the Start Nenu.

tenbob - I have clusters of icons on my desktop and they stay where I put them. I do use the 'align to grid' since that maintains spacing but only in the general area of the icon since it locates them on the nearest verticle and horizontal grid line.

The align to grid option checked and no others in the 'arrange by' sections keeps things like I want them unless I change screen size for some reason.

Another thing you might want to try is making a copy of your current (and properly arranged) desktop and save that somewhere. Then if you have a problem, log on as a different user with admin rights on your PC and copy/paste the saved copy over the existing desktop for your usual account.

At this point in the thread, I have everything the way I want it.

    (1) I have groups of apps and folders on the desktop
    (2) I have a DLL installed to save and restore the locations
    (3) I have another app that does the same thing.

Accordingly, I thank everyone that responded. It was a great help.
