How Do You Create Multiple Desktops For A Workstation?

I have a basic question on desktops. I would like to know how to create multiple desktops for a workstation. First for the Operating system stuff, second for applications software and then up to n destops for other stuff, etc. Is there a feature or an application that allows this. Its gotta be a simple procedure.

    Thanks in advance for helping.

    Thanks for yr help Newt.

Windows has a desktop which is say a 19 inch screen with icons on it. Say we call it here a physical and logical screen. I think most installations have one physical and one logical screen. But on the physical screen I would like to be able to keep a number of logical desktops. Say we call it desktop1, desktop2 ...desktopn. At the moment you can do this by tabbing through applications, but what about tabbing to another and diiferent desktop.

Is such a feature available and if so, can u point me in the right direction to install.

    Like your fish.

Codecutter - as I understand what you want, I don't know of any way to create multiple 'desktops' for a single user. The OS treats that particular folder in a peculiar fashion and I don't know of any way to have more than one per user account.

Note that I don't say there isn't a way - just none I've heard of.

Glad you like the fish. I surely had fun catching her and quite a few of her sisters when I went to Canada last summer. The Red River up there is an awesome catfish fishery.

You mean she's got sisters Newt. You're totally spoilled.

Onto the desktops, imagine you were limited to just one of those beauties from the river. I feel like that with my Desktop.

    Codecutter,

Came across this and thought about you. I see now that you're on win2000/2003 and this is earmarked for XP, but who knows, it might work. Or maybe MS can tell you how to make it work.

You would have to log off and log on as a different user to get to a different desktop.

Multiple desktops is a feature found in most all linux window managers and desktop environments. That's one of the neat things about linux. You can have x # of apps opened on one desktop and switch to another with the click of a mouse and work in other apps. And with some desktop environments you can send data or the entire application from one desktop to another one.

Windows is supposedly developing such a feature, but it will be a few yrs till we see it stable and a part of the OS.

Ok I think that www.desktopplus.com has what you are looking for. If not and you have an Nvidia videocard the Nview software can run virtual desktops.

Codecutter. If you want a basic virtual desktop program then JSpager is a good choice, people seem to like it.
