How can I print the checked items in my msconfig startup file?
How do I remove old items in my startup file (those that I do not normally want restored to my startup file after I've cleared it)?
Not earth-shaking, and I've replaced check marks for years with only a little foul language.

    Hello, welcome to the boards.
Go to Start\Run and type in Regedit and press Enter. Now use the + signs and browse to the Key [folder], and delete it.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
Note there is a minus sign, as you will see a Key right above it very similar, but without it. The one without the minus sign you want to keep. Look to the right pane of Regedit and verify you are at the correct one. You will see some of the entries you do not want.
    Then go to this one;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices-
    and do the same.

There is no simple way to print the settings in MSCONFIG or even cut and paste them to notepad. While you are in a registry folder presented to you by Mark,Export that branch of the registery to a temp.reg file and then print that file.
    Or...
You can use any kind of "screen capture" utility to take a snapshot of your Regedit, and then print it.

Go to Start > Run, and paste the following into the box, then click OK:

    regedit /e C:\run.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

the line may get broken up,when copy pasteing,so copy paste the first line and then the last
That will export the contents of the Registry Machine Run key to a C:\Run.txt file
    If you'd like >
Please do a copy and paste of that Run.txt file, and show us its contents.
alternatly SpyBot and several other apps can print out or export the stayups

If you are not happy tinkering in the Registry download and run Startup Control Panel - this will show what is running at startup and allow you to disable/delete entries. Don't think you can print from it.

StartupList is the best of the pack. Check out the switches - you can control the level of information output.

The above link is just the exe and has no readme type file so you won't know what the switches are. Executing the file as is will probably suit your purposes but if you want to drill down to the nth degree you'll need to run:
    startuplist.exe /verbose /complete /full.

On my system the 'short' list is 178 lines whereas the 'long' list is 1015 lines and gives the most extraordinary detail.

The switches are listed at the bottom of the text file produced in Notepad.

:D So they are. I have them in my Shortcut>Target line but couldn't remember where I'd seen them.

Thanks all. Advntage to being a senior citizen is that I don't have to apologize for not remembering things. Definition of clinical experience is doing same dumb things over and over until you find a way to cope with ignorance and errors. Will now go play with my regedit procs (I even have an old DOS bat file to copy changing attribs and restore my registry!). One of the problems of the golden years is that I've come down with CRS! Thanks again

I've been absent minded for as long as I can remember ( ) but only recently have been able to use the "When you get to my age..." routine. Daft thing is nobody bought the absent minded bit but now I can get away with murder!

Fine so far. I have startuplist, and I also have c:\run.txt. How do I post my run.txt. Or give me an e-mail address and I'll attach it.

But all I ever wanted was a simple way to record the startup button files in msconfig, and to remove old entries that I do not wish to check (i.e., make active). But it is educational!

“But all I ever wanted was a simple way to record the startup button files in msconfigâ€

StartupList will do that. OK, it outputs a little more than you wanted suchas Running Processes but it lists all the entries in msconfig.

“and to remove old entries that I do not wish to check (i.e., make active)â€

To "˜remove’ entries then Copy the following lines

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run-]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\runservices-]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run-]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\runservices-]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run-]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\runservices-]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run-]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\runservices-]

into Notepad. You will have to tidy up the lines so that they are not wrapped. I've noticed on previewing this post that the first four lines may start as "˜[- H’ ie a space between "˜-’ and "˜H’. If this is so then remove the space. Most Forum output make a right dog's dinner printing registry keys :D. Now Save the text as Remove.reg.

If you know double click on Remove.reg and allow it to be executed then most, if not all, of the unchecked items in msconfig will be removed.

The first four lines delete the relevant registry keys and their contents, the last four lines put the keys back without any contents.

There may still be some unchecked entries in msconfig relating to Disabled Startup Items. To remove them go to Start>Programs>Disabled Startup Items, right click on each entry and delete.

If you run msconfig now you should find a shorter list of only checked items.

Running StartupList again will give your new situation.

NB The run.txt you mentioned only lists entries in the Local Machine [aka All Users] run key ie the "˜checked’ version of the fifth key of Remove.reg above.

If you find the above a little daunting I'll knock out a file for you and give you an address to collect it. Just shout.

BTW, before you create Remove.reg make sure there's an empty line at the end of the file otherwise Regedit will not read, and therefore execute, the last line. Rarely mentioned point and most of us learnt the hard way.

skleeger Hi (skleeger sent me a PM)
    PeteC answerd that question,
    Open the run txt
Edit > Select All > Copy and Paste it into your post.

But I wonder ,how big is big?
is that all you wanting to do is look at and print startups ?
Or also get advice on them ? if so there are better tools ,so answer first before copy pasteing run txt

Thanks all. I think I originally got tired of seeing the unused entries. When I was a pre-teen I wanted to build a crystal radio receiver. This evolved into a a workshop, lots of gear, amateur and commercial licenses, all sorts of Collins gear, an antenna farm, etc. Not having learned from that I guess I am now into pursuing the registry. Had win2k on my machine sometime back as dual, removed it as it offered too many features that I didn't need. Now of course, I need it for some adobe photoshop goodies, so after I clear up the registry/msconfig in win98se I will replace the OS with win2k (not winxp: my kids have it, can't see advantages for me (besides I have win2k) All this to install Photoshop Photo Album (won't run under win98). Verbose, but thanks for all the help.
