Am running Win98 on a Dell XPS R450 and would like to use the wireless PCI adaptor to hook up to cable, but the Linksys adaptor says it requires at least Win98SE. I have the Win98SE Update disk($20) . What problems will I encounter if I upgrade my Win98FE to Win98SE using this disk? Also, are there any wireless cards and PCI adaptors that will work with Win98FE? My son has a more modern laptop and has the cable wireless Liinksys router already set up in my home and I would like to take advantage of this, but without losing my very stable setup that I have with my current Win98FE Dell computer. Any reasonable suggestions would be appreciated. I use this computer to do my banking and my tax returns, etc. and don't want to lose this ability if I try to update to 98SE and run into problems.

    Thanks,

    Marvin

If the CD has the word UPDATE on it, you will not end up with 98 Second Edition. It must say UPGRADE for you to end up with 98SE. The UPDATE CD only does Y2K fixes on the original 98.
Since you listed the price as $20, I think you have the UPDATE, and will not give you what you want.

Thanks for the info markp32 and broni, The CD says Second Edition Updates, and thanks for the links to wireless adaptors that should work with Win98fe. Unfortunately, I have found several online that said they work with win98fe, but when I read the details or check them out at the store they say Win98se on the box. But I will check these out.

It would be nice if I can find one to work with fe.

Broni, your first link for the US Robotics adaptor may be what I need. It says compatiable with Win95, so I could assume it must compatiable with Win98FE. I have found that a lot of times when they say Win98 they mean Win98SE unfortunately.

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    Food for thought.

You had best make sure you have all the necessary drivers for your hardware for 98SE.

Dell has a tendency to use propritory hardware specific to the individual machine.

They refer to 98SE because support for 98FE has been dropped and the same for SE will soon be also.

Also if you have an Internal Modem it can be a problem.

But over all SE is much better than 98FE.

Thanks for the input Billy Bob and Broni, I checked the U.S. Robotics adaptor and in the small print it said that for Win95 and win98 one will need a third party software in order to make internet connections work. I am afraid that for now I will stick to my win98FE, but Billy Bob, if I try to install the Win98SE update over win98FE, how badly will it mess me up? I would like the updated USB support and the networking support without the other stuff if that is possible.

On a home or Custom built machine I would say go for putting 98SE over FE as long as you have the UPGRADE CD. ( not the $20 version )

And you boot to the Win98 Startup disk and make sure Windows goes back into the exisitng directory ( folder ).

But by you having a Dell machine I can't be sure that things would go the same way as on mine ( self built ).

What works for me may not work for you.

But I do know and will say that SE will go over FE with no probelms. if you boot from the floppy to do it

BTW. SE is much better than FE.
