I have a problem with the short cut icons on my desk top. When I click on (especially IE/OE) it takes several clicks to get them going. (i.e. hour glass) But when I click on these same icons next to the startup in the tray, one click and they are off and going. There must be an easy answer, but I can't solve it. I am running Win98 and have just updated to IE6. Willieboye

    Hi willieboye
Is there any possibility that you have an abundance of icons on your desktop?
Perhaps you have too much running in the background all at once?
It may be helpful to go into msconfig and uncheck all unneccassary apps from loading at start up?
Start......run....type: msconfig......... click ok.........go to the start up tab
To see what you should keep checked and what is safe to uncheck, use these two sites:
    This one
    And This one too

Hi Daizy, I have been deleting desk top icons and some of the startup items. (I didn't have too many, as I had done some before.) I can't see any difference. I must go out of town for a few days, so this problem will have to go on hold! Willieboye

It sounds like you have things set up so you have to double click the icons on the desktop. You can change how fast you have to double click in order for things to run in the mouse applet in the control panel. If you want to use single clicks open windows explorer and click on view\folder options and choose web style or else choose custom and then click on the settings tab. Tick the line that says single click to open an item (point to select).

Hello Zander, Thanks for the tip. I thought that I already had single click checked. Went to control panel, clicked on mouse icon (a couple of times), Clicked on step savers and found that single click was indeed checked. While in this window I clicked on basics and reset the double click speed. Well what do you know, all of a sudden, everything seems to be back to normal! Thank you and Daizy, et al for all the help. I certainly appreciate it.
We can consider this string closed. willieboye
