Does anyone know of a product that will restrict a user from accessing sites other than those defined?

    Hello allawrence,

*Does anyone know of a product that will restrict a user from accessing sites other than those defined?*

Yes, its the hosts file and its on your computer. But its the reverse of "other than those defined ". The hosts method is everything is accessible other than those specifically restricted.

Go to this site. Explains what the Host file is and how to use it http://accs-net.com/hosts/what_is_hosts.html

An extract from "how to use" portion:

    quote
If a site is in your Hosts file, and has its address set to 127.0.0.1, that site will not be able to be loaded from the web. This is how advertisements are kept out, but it also means you may not be able to view a site you want to see.
    unquote

    Regards - Charles

    Charles...

I appreciate the reply... I am aware of the hosts file, but was hoping to find one that worked the opposite of that file...

Check out the software linked to on this site. Lots of filtering and monitoring software there and one may suit your needs.

An idea just came into my mind.
Dunno if it works, haven't tested it.

    Disable DNS.
List all sites you want accessable in your hosts file.

This will affect all browsers, I think.
Only way to get to unlisted sites is entering ip address directly.

Let us know if this works.

    Regards,
    lee

Gianni--A very helpful reference, but adding a site to IE's Restricted Sites, generally will not prevent access to the site. It only affects the site's ability to use cookies, ActiveX controls, scripting--all the settings in Custom Level. This seldom disables a site to the extent that you cannot reach it. Usually the worst that happens is that you cannot download from it and/or you cannot see some or all images. And often not even that happens.

    Hi al and others,

Happened to tumble upon these two sites so I thought I would revive this thread.

    DNSKong

    and

    eDexter

To download latest versions you need to go here.

    Hope this is relevant.

Edit: Oops, this is the same site that charlesvar mentioned (first reply). It also explains DNS and filters, and how to use the DNSKong and eDexter programs.
