Run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
With 9x and ME, to Control Panel\Add Remove Programs, double click the IE entry, a window will pop up, choose the Repair Option. Reboot when prompted.
    Housecall, online AV scan
    Online Trojan Scan
Get SpyBot Search & Destroy, update it then do the scan. Remove all that is already checked.

Hi rlafeve- It might be simpler to go to Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information. When the System Information window opens, go to the Tools menu at the top and from the drop down list select Internet Explorer Repair Tool and click it. It will send up a small box with the option to repair Internet Explorer. Run it and see if that is the fix. I imagine it is as markp62 isn't often wrong. Clydeo22

If you have IE5 then IE6 should be ( or used to be ) avialable right from the Windows Update site.

It will not be listed as a critical update.

But if it is there go thru the various screens and download it only where you will always have it. Then install it from your HD.

Any hiccups while installing online can ( and did ) raise problems.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
rlafeve, go to the above link and you will end up downloading a file named Ie6setup.Exe, note where this file is downloaded. When it is finished, double click that file. This file downloads and installs IE 6 SP1.
When it first opens, choose Custom Install, now you will see a tab appear with Advanced on it, click on Advanced. Now another window will open, choose Download and run setup later. It will download all the files at this time into a folder named Windows Update Setup Files. It may take awhile to do this. When finished, the Ie6setup file will terminate. Go to the folder and run Ie6setup again, and choose to install.
This way you will have the files needed in case you need to reinstall, and you will not need to connect to the internet.

If you do not do it this way, and you need to reinstall Ie6 at a later date, Ie6setup will insist on connecting to the internet.

If this is the case and you have another partition available MOVE them to that partiton in their own folder before installing.

They have a bad habit of getting lost if on the C: drive.

But if it gives you a choice ( I think it does ) of where to download them but them on another partition to begin with.

I really do not think you should have AOL fix your Internet Explorer. It has it's very own Repair Tool, and in my experience works very well. When you do get the message that the Repair Tool cannot fix it, that is because a file is corrupted, been overwritten by some other program being installed and replaced with a previous version, or is missing, perhaps by AOL Fix It.
In a way 5.5 does exist on your system. If you uninstall IE 6, it gets the old 5.5 files out of where they are stored and restores 5.5.
RealPlayer has a hidden setting in it's configuration options where it loads up at start up, and I would not doubt it created problems during the install. In Realplayer, go to View\Preferences, click on the General tab, you will see Start Center towards the bottom, click on Settings and disable it. Ignore the doom warning when doing this, as you really do not need it running in the background. It just sits there and takes up resources.
Then reinstall IE 6, and keep AOL Fix It away from it.

Great advice markp62! How could AOL possibly know how to fix one's setup properly?! Stay away from that 'fixit' feature unless it's an AOL problem. :)

rlafeve - did you download and run Spybot as markp62 recommended in his first post? It's sounding more and more like spyware is at least part, if not all, of the problems you're experiencing (slow performance, IE errors).

This may be too early in the Morning and I may be thinking incorrectly but here goes anyway.

This thread is about fixit from aol which I assume means that AOL is being used.

If AOL ( so called co-branded I think ) is indeed being used then leave MICROSOFT IE fixes OUT of it.

AOL software needs AOL to fix.

Earthlink software needs Earthlink to fix.

Time Warner software needs Time warner to fix.
    etc. etc. etc.

If none of the above ( which is the best thing ) is being used then leave their fixes out of it and use MS fixes.

I will bet heavily that MS IE and AOL IE are crossed up ( mis-matched ). AOL is looking for AOL version files which I would venture to say are now MS files.

And there is also a possibility that the files do exist but may be in a different location and a different version than AOL is looking for.

The above thoughts come form a snowed-in
