    Please let me preface this with the fact that I'm an eDummy with little understanding of computers and the vernacular. My computer is a custom(cheap) with a 20gb HDD, AMD Athlon, Win98se. I have an old "Quantum Fireball ST" (8gb ??) with Win95 on it and would like very much to be able to read it from from my from my main HDD. I've purchased an enclosure and installed small HDD in it with the W98 drivers. When I go to drive "F" I find a folder called "Failsafe.drv ", sub folders are "CDrom ", Command ", "Failsafe ", and "Windows ". There is one other folder which is "Recycled ". When accessing the sub folders under "Failsafe.drv" I find restricted files or stuff I know NOTHING about; such as MS Dos entries. My question(s) is/are, how do I accomplish my goal? I've been told by others that I need to partition my W98se HDD to access Win95. If true can, will someone be kind enough to guide me step by step through this process? Or, am I asking the impossible, keeping in mind that I'm an eDummy? If anyone cares to attempt to teach me I would be forever greatful and will do a good deed.

    If all you want to do is read the info from your old drive. You must set it as slave. Look at the back of hdd, you'll see some pins, and a small plastic jumper. Normally printed on the drive, shows how to install the jumper to make it a slave. Then just connect the power and ribbon cable. Usually, your new drive, has a 2ribbon cable connector. Plug that in. Then in Win98 explorer, you should be able to read all from the drive. If you are asking to set this as a dual boot, someone else will have to help.

    If drive is in an external IDE housing it should be kept as MASTER.

    W98 needs no special settings to read a W95 drive.

    Something that does Red Flag here is that Failsafe.drv - sounds like that drive had Drivespace Compression in use.

    If the data on the drive is not needed I would do a fresh Fdisk and format. - If you are not sure how to do this, then don't. if you fail to select the proper drive it will wipe your system (w98) drive.

    Huuummmmm, Thanks I think. I don't want to ***** this up. Can't afford to have it fixed. First I'll change the jumper. At this time the drv w/win95 is set to slave per someones instructions. As you no doubt can tell I am very inexperienced and I thank you for the advice. I'll let you know.

    example:" F:\FAILSAFE.DRV\command\drvspace.sys" is not a valid win32 application. Another is: "F;\FAILSAFE.DRV\WINDOWS\HIMEN.sys" is not a valid win32.......Another is: "cannot find the file "F:\FAILSAFE.DRV\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS" make sure the file exisists on your system and that the path and file name are correct. After moving the jumper to what appears to be "Master" I have less access than when it appeared to be in a "slave" position. The jumper locations are on the csae and I am following that diagram. If you or anyone else has an idea I sure would appreciate hearing it. Thanks.

    I see what the problem is. You have a 8 gb drive. I am guessing that you had 95 or 95a installed on the drive, on a 2 gb partition with a FAT16 file system, with three more partitions on it. So that when it was working as a standalone it had C:, D:, E, and F: drives on it.
    Now this is where it get tricky. I am only guessing that your current Master drive has two partitions on it, so that you had C:, and D:,.
    Now the drive letter assignment with both drives installed are in this fashion as follows.
    Master = C: E:
    Slave = D: F: G: H:
    Do you see how the letters jumped around? It is because both drives has a Master Partition on them, so they get priority letter assignments, then the Logical drives are assigned. You'll need to change the startup accordingly.

    Markp thanks for your response. My machine has w98se with one partition, drv "C ". The drv I'm trying to access is a 1.5(???) with win95 on it. I know I've been in there 'cause I was able to run a scan disc on it but can't access the old pix and emails left on the drive. When I first got this bug I thought it was going to be a piece of cake. I was under the impression that I could see all the stuff on the old drv just by plugging in a USB cable between the external and my main machine. Whoa, guess I was wrong. What other info will you need? I do appreciate any help.
