I just downloaded Window Media Player 9 series. However, I still have version 7 on my system. Can I delete version 7 without impairing series 9 version. Are there shared files etc. between the two?

There should be no problem in deleting v.7 - if you get a message re. 'deleting shared/common files which are no longer in use' - or words to that effect - choose to keep them to be on the safe side. They will not harm your m/c.

May I suggest you keep the old one?

In fact, may I humbly suggest you get the old 6.4?

The newer ones have all the latest codecs, but in my view, the older one has a cleaner interface, does not hog resources, does not contain spyware, does not crash itself or nearby fragile objects.

I always have the newest installed, but mostly use the older one for its less invasive behavour - and I will as long as the company lets me.

Thanks for responding to my previous thread about deleting previous versions of Windows Media Player. Will the system always advise that I could be deleting shared files b4 actually deleting the old program?

Another question...when I try to download a file a dialog box comes up and says it needs a program to download and lists the various programs on my system. How do I know what program is required to download a particular file?

The uninstall program will not uninstall files needed by another application. The message to which I referred - the exact wording of which escapes me - usually speaks of shared/common files which are no longer needed. My response is to keep the files - needed or not! It's the safest bet.

On your other question - can you please post more specific detail. I am not familiar with the dialogue box you mention, especially the part " says it needs a program to download and lists the various programs on my system . "

    hollinm--
    1) I seem to remember reading that MS does not recommend WMP 9 for Win98FE. Do you have Win98FE or SE? I have the former and my version of WMP is 7.1.
    2) If you decide to get rid of WMP7, Uninstall it, not Delete. But are you saying you already have installed WMP9?

I have Windows 98 SE and it kept reminding me to upgrade so I did. Media Player V 7 does not show up in my add/remove programs dialog box so how do I uninstall it. I haven't done anything with it at this point but Media Player series 9 has been downloaded.

This doesn't sound like a Internet Explorer download dialog box, IE has it's own download process, no need for an external program. What kind of file are you trying to download?

If you are using the Mozilla browser, you will get a dialog box similar to that, asking what to do with the file type you are trying to download. For example, if it were a ASF or WMV file, you could associate with Media Player, it would be downloaded and then run in WMP. If a EXE file it would be best just to choose to only download. You could choose this as the default action for the file type. Again, the Mozilla browser has it's own download process, no need for an external program.

I, too, would like a clarification on that message, and which browser are you using?

If you upgraded v.7 to v.9 then v.7 no longer exists on your system.

For what I know, all apps in this series add / replace codecs (I think as .dll files) AND the user interface.

The big change in interface was fron 6.4 to 7.

DL'ing and installing 7 left 6.4 in place, with updated decoding guts. Upgrading to 9 added functionality, but in my experience not all of it is available on 6.4 - it could be a policy, or just some broken registry entries.

If the case is that v7 is no longer on my system then when I go into programs I have an icon that say mp71 and when I click it, it says that the v7.1 wizard will now set up medica player v 7.1. Is it ok to delete this?

hollinm--If, as you say, you have not yet installed WMP9 (but only downloaded it), then why not uninstall WMP7 before you do install WMP9? Should avoid all the concerns you have raised. (Except for the download issue markp62 has addressed.)

Please clarify a couple of points - I am a little

    1. Are you running 98SE? - if you are running 98 (First Edition) then you are unable to run Media Player 9.

    2. You have downloaded MPSetup.exe v.9 ? - have you run this install program yet?

    Hi hollinm,

The mp71 you referred to is the setup file for upgrading from 6.4 version and yes you can delete it, but it's not necessary. It will never do anything but take up a little bit of space. MP9 will install over 7.1 (upgrade) so there's really no need to uninstall it first.

Lets get more info on the download dialog box. If IE is doing that, sounds like someone/something is trying to take over your PC.

I have Windows 98 second edition on my system. I removed the Version 7 Media Player and downloaded Version 9 series. So far everything looks ok and the media player is working fine.
Sorry for all the trouble I have caused everyone.
The other issue with the dialog box asking for which program I am going to find and example and send it to see if I can clear up my confusion.
Once again thanks for all your help.
