I'm trying to help and elderly couple that has Win ME with Norton AV 2003. It worked and updated automatically until they switched from a Dial Up to Cable Modem. The Cable people didn't offer them any assistance with the OE and the Norton. I got their mail going but having a problem with Live Update.

It won't connect. From the Control Panel I clicked the LiveUpDate and saw that it was trying to make a connection through DialUp, and their old ISP.

There are selections for HTTP, FTP, ISP. The ISP had the old ISP in it, I removed it and can't seem to get where I want to go. It wants to connect through a 56K Modem and I can't remove that entry. There is something about Proxy there but I know nothing about that.

Their AV has not been updated since August when they were connection. It needs help bad. OE had 485 emails when got it straight. I feel sure it has Viruses to be removed.

So, would someone offer me a suggestion that I can use to make the Live Update feature work?

I'm going on the Cable in early Jan so what I learn about that here will help me then!

    Hi Mudd

To get immediate proctection for the computer....Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only) will bring down all the upto date definitions. I'm sorry I can not help on your connection problem. When I switched, NSW picked up the change of service when going from dialup to broadband.

Thanks. That will at least get them up to date. I didn't mention on the original post that an online scan found 23 infected files.

They need all the help they can get. The Lady is the user and she is 76, almost 77 and gets around on the PC fairly well.

    Hi Mudd!

I think that this has the scent of an uninstall - reinstall, if the Lady still has the NAV CD.

Put the CD in the tray and when asked, tell it to uninstall NAV and when finished, remove the CD.

In Windows Explorer, do a search for Symantec and then Norton and delete everything it finds.

Put the CD back in the tray and when asked, reinstall NAV and run live-update.

I did it once on WinME with NAV 2001 and it worked well.

    Good luck!

I did part of what you mentioned. I uninstalled, rebooted, and installed again. No change at all.

What I didn't do was search for the Norton and Symantec stuff. Will try that tomorrow.

I'll post back either way. But, if that doesn't work, they and I are still in a bind!

Have You checked the expiry date for the service?

It could be one of those coincidences ...... ;) ......

Yes, the expiration date is early next year. I was the one that put the program in for them. Until then, they had nothing!

I "think" the problem lies with the connection setup. I cannot get the configuration to release itself from wanting to use a dialup connnection, which it doesn't have anymore.

If I were not so scare of the Registry I'd look there and maybe delete the part that has that and start over again.

I know better than to go places I don't know. Went into a "Cat House" one day years ago. There were no cats in there!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope all of them were still contained in mail files.... if not this could be a long project.

Some were in System Files, and yes I know that is bad. If I could just get the Virus program Updated, might be able to run a scan and get rid of most of them. The others I could go for a removal tool I suppose.

I suppose also that the failure of the updater might be caused by a Virus.

I'm going to suggest to them that they need to take it in to a shop if it is going to be long and drawn out process. It really needs to be cleaned up and I'm not much at that. I'm just trying to help with what little expertise that I have.

Mudd - I'll take a look at my home PC this evening and see how it's set.

There is also a site for downloading the most current AV def files for Norton that is often a day or two ahead of the normal updater. Downside is you have to pull the entire 4Mb+ each time but with broadband that doesn't take long.

I've never compared it to the link Dennis L gave you but I'll test both and if there's any advantage to the page for grabbing the whole thing, I'll send you that URL as well.

Thank you. The site that Dennis sent also showed that the download would be something like 4.7MB. That's not a problem with their connection. I went to the net today and downloaded a file for them and was downloading 260KBs. At that speed a 4MB would like light flash to their old dialup.

    Mudd,
    two thoughts:

Is the old connection still there in terms of account and modem drivers?
    If so, try removing them.

    Does Windows Update work?

The Account was there until I removed it. Now for the modem drivers, I don't know exactly how to remove that part. Do I go to the Hardware and remove that?

    Didn't try Windows Update.

    Thankfully It's Over

After more hours of helping my friends, I was unable to get a good result. Did get the Virus Updated from Symantec Page.

Removed the Modem, physically, and deleted and reinstalled Norton 2003. It did not help at all. The updated will not work! Tried to configure it to the Cable but it still wants a Dialup Connection. I'm guessing something was stored in the Registry when it first went in and that has to be changed/deleted for this to operated. I'm not in that procedure at all.

The guy's last word was, "I'll just replace it. Four years old and it was a good one. She wants a Computer that is dependable. "

I suggested that he contact a PC Repair Service which would be a less expensive move. He said, "No, I'm disgusted with this. "

Wish he would have gotten disgusted on Monday of this week!

I thank all who offered suggestions.

    Hi Mudd!

The next step would be a download of a Symantec Removal Tool and/or a Registry Cleaning Tool but they opted for an easier solution.

When I read "Thankfully It´s Over" I was happy for Your success and was expecting to learn something ...... :D ...... and I did!

    Regards,
    Christer

I feel so badly about this. This old man and lady are just Jewels. He will do anything, and I do mean anything for the lady. He must have a little money as their driveway is complimented by 2 new vehicles, have two large screen TVs, etc.

I don't feel bad about the money he is spending because he has it and is using for their pleasure.

I'm disappointed because I didn't find the way out of that. I'm to face this is Jan 04 as the Cable Internet will come my way. Lines are hooked up and ready to go.

I did call the Cable Co and asked if they would furnish a tip about how this might be corrected as they must have been through it before now. As expected, no advice was given. Said that is not in their department.

I did get the Viruses out, system clean by going online and scanning to find out what was there, downloaded Symantec's Virus Removal Tools, updated the definitions, so it's clean now. Won't be next week probably because can't do updates and they are not even going to try to go online to do it. She watched me and said, "Don't even ask me to do what you doing, it would never happen! "

I ask him what he would do with his old unit. He said he would give it to someone that doesn't have the money to buy. Hopefully he can find a family with a school kid that would use it.
Ask me to bring it home with me and keep until the problem could be worked out.

Fine couple they are. Won't mention amount but as I left he tried to slip a "large fold" of bills into my pocket. That is not acceptable to me as I don't do what little I can for money. Just for friends.
He'll get me some way, he always has in the past.

Better stop this. It's not a place for boo hoos and tears!
