    Now I am totally confused.

I am attempting to solve problems I have with my PIII that hangs up at times. I have 2 Western Digital HD's and a LG CDROM and a HP9100i rw.

I have moved the drives around as follows on many peoples suggestions:
    ide1 Primary Master = 15gb WD
ide1 Primary slave = LG CD ROM
    ide 2 Secondary master = HP9100i
    ide 2 Secondary slave = 20gb WD

All of a sudden I get a message No 80 conducter cable installed.

I am using the exact same ide cables that were in the machine when I purchased it.

    1. What is this message referring to?
    2. How do I solve it?

The error message is refering to the IDE cable - the system figures that you've installed a 40 wire cable instead of the 80 wire cable. I'd suggest trying another 80 wire cable.

Also, I would make a change to the cabling - I personally don't like to attach a CD-ROM drive to the same cable as a hard drive, and I'd never make a hard drive a slave to a CD-ROM drive.

    Primary Master = 15gb WD
    Primary slave = 20gb WD
    Secondary master = HP9100i
Secondary slave = LG CD ROM

The 80 conductor cable is directional. If the blue end is connected to the HDD it should be turned around and connected to the mobo.
