I have an old PC which I am planning on gutting and rebuilding,
I want it to be fast and cheap, I have worked out that if I buy a Intel motherboard and Processor I'm going to be spending about £210 whereas a AMD setup will cost me around £100 for the same speed! Can anyone explain to me why I might want to go for Intel?
My plan is keep my old 7GB harddrive (as the PC will only be a workstation and I have a sever if extra storage is required), keep the CD drive, the floppy drive, case, power supply, VGA card and really just upgrade, motherboard, processor and RAM.
If anyone has any ideas on please let me know! I am looking to buy the components from http://www.pcworld.co.uk/pccomponents/ and upgrade in the next few weeks as I'm recovering from chest wall surgury!

    Thanx in advance,
    Gary

i have gotten to like AMD boards better than Intel. to me, AMD seems a little faster. don't know if that's right or wrong, that's just what i've noticed.

The last 5 pc's I have built for myself and friends have been AMD/Asus based - well pleased. AMD are still better value than P4's, IMO. Remember to check that your old case will take an ATX board and that the power supply is adequate.

BTW, check out prices at www.dabs.com

Probably a Fords and Chevys argument, but I prefer AMD. Nah, I have no scientific data to back it up- just an opinion. They are fast, dependable, priced right and have good tech support. I will upgrade one of these days, and I'll go AMD again.

I have 2 PC's, both running WinXP Home. One has an AMD Athlon XP 1.8 w/MSI MS-6380 Pro 2 motherboard, 133 FSB. The other has an Intel PIV 1.7 (can't remember what MB) and 100 FSB. Both have 512 megs DDR SDRAM. The difference between the two is VERY noticeable. The AMD is way faster in every aspect. I've had two Intel chips and two AMD chips and I will never buy another Intel chip again.

However, as it has already been mentioned. This matter is like "Chevy vs. Ford ". You are going to get strong opinions on both sides. What IS true is that AMD chips are cheaper to buy and are more easily overclocked, if you are given to doing that sort of thing.

Mainly, so you can be an elitist snob and look down at all us AMD users! :D j/k

Certain apps that can take advantage of hyperthreading beat out AMD procs in benchmarks. The leaders keep swapping places but I think that at this moment in time, the highest-end Intel cpus will out-overclock the highest-end AMD cpus. If that floats your boat.

So for 95% percent of us, there is really isn't a good answer. Since most of us have to work for a living and greatly appreciate value for our money, AMD is very popular. To put it in perspective, can you imagine what we'd be paying for Intel processors if AMD (or some company like it) wasn't around?

From this one's perspective, two words - No contest ....

Been an avid AMD fan since the Athlon slot processors - today's K7's really kick some rump. And, when pricing is added to the equation - It becomes a No Brainer.

Some poor fool may want to argue in support of Intel, but I have yet to see one that will keep up with a well built Athlon box. If you follow any discussions re: different cores and mfg dates on some of the Thunderbirds, Palomino's and Bartons - there are some very sweet CPU's to be had for over-clocking and thats something thats tough to replicate with any P-4.

    Bring on the 64's - hehehe ..........

    ;)

Hey Rockster: Have you checked the prices on the 64s?? Gulp, my rich uncle will have to pass away......

But boy, if I can scrape up the bucks, my mouth is watering, so to speak.
