I want to give my old computer an NEC 500mghz to charity. For security, I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows From the OEM's (NEC) Master Recovery CD with no problem. MY problem is that the CD has printed on the label MS# x04 91841 368 00024 000. This will not activate Windows. I've lost the orig Win98SE booklet. Is there anyway I can activate windows. I can't call NEC they are long gone from the desktop computer buisness - This is a great old workhorse with 256RM a CD Burner a Zip etc. and will make some poor child a nice gift .. Can anyone help me activate windows so I can give this away.

Nelsons, Hi - and Welcome to the Board :)

We are unable to assist with missing product keys, etc - see Posting Rules - for whatever reason or purpose. Sorry.

If you have access to another copy of Win 98 - use that.

nelsons--Can you enter the Registry? If so, there is a perfectly legal way of finding the Product Key and Product ID.

I wait for your response and also a comment from PeteC.

    Welshjim,

I don't want to appear hardhearted or uncharitable - especially at this time of year and with nelsons' admirable endpoint in mind, but ..........

However any legal methods are fine, of course. It is years since I made an install of 98, but if memory serves the CD key is needed at the end (?) of the install process. I guess that is the point nelsons has reached. In that case he does not have access to the registry.

I do not understand this post.
Just format the disks and give them the PC.
You are being charitable and the recipients have the problem of
    setting it up.
Maybe they will post here for further help ;)
    regards

You can legally give a computer to anyone you want...however...
You cannot legally give them a working version of any MS product, unless you include the booklet/disk cover/holographic sticker that contains the Key Code.
As you no longer have access to the key code, you cannot include a windows installation on the computer.
Unless you're willing to purchase another license, and include it with the gift, I suggest simply donating the hardware, and hoping that someone else will be able to help the recipient acquire an OS (legally).
