...whenever I finish transferring a large amount of files over my 802.11b wireless. When it crashes, it gives no error message - just leaves me with a blank desktop (wallpaper only).

What happens is this: I open an explorer folder on each computer, then drag and drop the files while holding down the shift key (or right-click the files and select move). After the files are successfully moved, when I close either folder window, explorer goes down. If I bring up Task Manager and "run" explorer, all I get is the folder window. Most 'other' times, it restores the desktop, but not in this case. I need to at least 'log-off' in order to get the desktop back up.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Newt!

Hope you and yours had a good one. XP-Pro on both ends, laptop is continually updated with "Windows Update ", desktop has only SP1. Both are behind a Cayman 3220 router, both run ZA (free).

    Thanks!

    Russ

Oops. No vacation but missed your post somehow. Oops.

I'll be sure to remember and take a look later though - tonight or tomorrow. Too near supper time for me to do any heavy thought right now and your problems usually call for some of that. Interesting stuff though and keeps my brain working. :D

Glad to see I'm exercising your noggin! <LOL> If you really want a challenge, look several threads back for another of mine. ;)

Lets get a fresh start on this situation.
    - start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /f on both PCs
    - empty your event logs on both PCs
    - dump your temporary internet files and cookies on both PCs
    - you didn't mention anti-spyware stuff but get, update, run both Ad-aware and Spybot and remove the stuff they find.
    - defrag, reboot, defrag, reboot to let the system deal with any fragmentation of your system hives. Earlier OS versions couldn't but XP seems to deal with them even while the OS is running.

Next time you do a large file transfer
    - before you start, open task manager, set it to stay on top, and monitor networking.
    - If you do get another problem, try again but this time, monitor performance.
    - If it's still acting up but nothing exciting from either of those two, try again while monitoring processes with the screen set to arrange by CPU useage.
    - Check your event logs for errors or warnings that look related.

And yup, I know your problem is with Windows Explorer but XP has tied WE and IE so closely together that problems can cross over.

Well, I defragged and chkdsk'd all drives and then transferred about 200 megs across my wireless. No crash this time! :D I sure wouldn't have guessed this as a cause.

    Thanks Newt!
