Win 98 SE will not go into Safemode.
Method I have tried is hold down ctrl while rebooting.
I have not used safemode in about a year. So I dont know how long this has been the case.
    Would welcome ideas.

Figure I would add onto noahdfear...picked up the following info doing a Google search for giffyo...

    Windows 95

Restart your computer normally by clicking Start/Shutdown and picking Restart instead of shutdown. Then once your computer has started to boot back up wait until you see the text "Starting Windows95" and then press F5 key.
    ============================

    Windows 98

Restart your computer normally by clicking Start/Shutdown and picking Restart instead of shutdown. Then once your computer has started to boot back up hold down the CTRL key (you can also use the SHIFT key if CTRL doesnt work) until the Windows 98 Startup Menu is displayed.

You can also achieve the same effect through following this procedure : Restart your computer as mentioned above but instead of holding down CTRL wait until you see the text "Starting Windows98" and then press F8.

Once at the Windows 98 Startup Menu select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
    ============================

    Windows 2000

Restart your computer normally by clicking Start/Shutdown and picking Restart instead of shutdown. When you reach the boot menu asking you which Operating System you would like to use hit F8 and then choose Safe Mode from the menu

    bullet proof method

    START > RUN > MSCONFIG

click on the ADVANCED button in the lower right.

put a check in [ ] Enable Startup Menu.

Click Apply, Then OK to the message ". . . must restart computer for the changes to take affect. "

On Restart you will get the Boot Option menu. You can use the numer or up/down arrows to select your choice.

( Don't forget to go back in mscofig and remove the check when finished . . . )

I have been busy, sorry it took so long to update.
Safe mode does work now, The ctrl or shift method did NOT work

taping f8 did work and the other method RUN ect did also work.

Thank you very much all. The only thing I can figure is my virus program is not alowing ctrl or shift to bring up safemode screen.
My anti virus program is AVG,

    Thank you.

Thanks for posting back. Not unusual for one method to work but not another.

No, this is not the case, at this point in the bootup process AVG does not exist.

if you have TweakUI, check the "Boot" tab (use little arrow to "scroll" the tabs towards RH if it's not immediately visible); there's a checkbox under "General" called "Function keys available" which controls whether you have the F8 option or not.

    best wishes, HJ.

    Many thanks for the help.
I have made a note of all the methods, in case I run into this again in the future.
I now see that one method may work on one system and not on another.

Also I thought possibly that my AVG virus protection was causing my ctrl / shift key not to let safemode option operate.

I may be off base on this as

    Markp62

The reason I had a question on this was AVG is a DOS and windows program.
When I boot up my screen displays checking nvram
Then enter password.... (configured into BIOS)
Then at that point screen is still black
then displays Initialize AVG Boot Up
then blue screen checking for virus
    no virus found then
Black screen.....Auto detecting pri master and so on
    Then windows starts /

This is why I thought AVG boots up before windows.

Many thanks again to all of you.

Ahh, the AVG bootup scanner, it is called from the C:\Autoexec.Bat file. It is loaded while the computer is in dos mode, does it thing, then it is unloaded out of your computer's memory. At this point windows starts it's boot process.
