Click on the article Arie wrote and compare your permissions settings to his. He explains how to set them at high safety and still retain function. I get alot of those script errors when I use high permissions and disable the items in Tools> Internet Options> Security>Internet Custom level security settings. I "continue to run scripts on this page ", and ignore it. I think IE reports website content as an "error" when IE is not enabled to use the different scripts. When you ignore the "error ", it grants permission on that page only. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    Johanna
    Thanks,
i havent had any updates lately
but this just started..Not ActiveX as they are discussing
    i get download abetterinternet.com,etc
    and
    clikspring.com,etc
I have no clue if i should run scripts, so right now i will NOT change any settings
besides, i feel the answer is to block it before it gets in, or contact them and tell them i do not want it/stop sending

Active X is a form of scripting. Have you run Spybot or AdAware lately? In your first post you said this happens when everything is shut down. Have you disabled Windows Messenger? Perhaps you are receiving ads. For heavens sake, don't click on them!

    To disable Windows Messenger:
    Admin tools>Services>
scroll to "messenger" and disable. Unless you need info from a system admin, you don't need this on. It has become a new way to Spam.

They are not pop ups, in the usual sense of the word. The ads are coming to you via your internet connection in the form of Messenger, a feature built into XP to let network messages be relayed. Because they are not coming through your browser, Pop Up Stopper isn't recognizing them. Shut it off per my instructions, above.

Do a search on this board for Spybot or AdAware info. Many people run both, (me included). If you want to do a thorough clean up, follow the steps listed inMike Flynn's Clean Up

Let us know how you fare.

There are two kinds of Messenger on an XP comp, enabled by default. One is MS Messenger (that little green person icon on the right hand side of your toolbar) It it used for instant messanging programs. That is not the program I am referring to.

The other Messenger is Windows Messenger Service. It allows administrators to communicate over networks ( "Shutdown everybody, we're killing the server in 5 minutes ") (Unscrupulous?) people have figured out how to send XP comps ads using that service. They get past the firewall and pop up on your desktop. If the script writers are malicious, your computer is vulnerable to a number of problems. If you don't use the service, it is simple to shut down. Follow the directions in my previous post.

Click on the links in Mike Flynn's post for links to the free Spybot and AdAware downloads. They can scan your computer for spyware, tracking cookies, and other junk you don't want on your system, and delete whatever YOU choose.

How to turn off Windows Messenger Service
This page does not address, nor is it intended to address, problems associated with services involved with Instant Messaging. We provide these directions as a public service and have no affiliation with any entity outside the University of Virginia which points to this page, including ISP's, vendors and other entities, specifically panicware.com and siliconcrack.com.
What Windows Messenger Service Allows to Happen on Your Computer

Should a pop up box appear on your screen with the words "Messenger Service" in the title bar such as the one below, chances are that you have Windows Messenger Services enabled.

In their initial state, Microsoft Windows operating systems (98, ME, XP, 2000, NT) allow anyone on the internet to pop up Windows on your screen. There is no need for them to know anything about your computer and your computer does not care who does it.

Even less savory individuals may pop up messages on your screen that try to fool you into taking actions that may not be in your best interest.

    Disabling the Messenger Service
To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your computer, you can disable the Messenger service. Its easy to reverse at a later time if you wish to do s

    Windows XP Home
    Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
    Click Performance and Maintenance
    Click Administrative Tools
    Double click Services Scroll
    down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
    Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
    Click OK

If you're using xp home I don't think it'll be in the start menu by default. If it's not there right click your taskbar, choose properties. Click on the start menu tab and if your using the xp style start menu click the customize button next to start menu. Then click on the advanced tab and look in the list for system administrative tools. If you're using the classic start menu click the customize button next to classic start menu and put a check mark next to display administrative tools (no advanced tab).

    Another alternative route;

    Start>run
    type services.msc then click OK
    scroll to messenger>right click>choose properties
on general tab under startup type choose disabled
    click apply then ok

    MIR11,

Gorilla has an answer for pop-ups. HOSTS file. Nothing else required. It can keep you out of some places you might want to go though, such as loading a pogo game room if you go there. Can also make some pictures on web pages show up as white boxes with red X's. You can edit the entries to suit your needs.

Update and clean out good with Spybot and AdAware, install and run BHO, if you haven't already (it was in mflynn's cleanout post), uncheck 'enable third parties' again and you should be set.

How to configure AdAware to 'MAX' settings.

From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan "
    Then......
Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" , "Scan active processes ", "Scan registry ", "Deep scan registry" , "Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files "
    Then.....
Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........ "Cleaning engine" and tick "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot "

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.
Run Adaware, delete all it finds. If anything is left unfixed, reboot.

    And Spybot

On the startmenu>all programs>spybot>select 'advanced' mode. On settings tab> select settings, scroll down to scan priority, select 'highest'. Scroll to 'expert settings', check the first 3.

    Hope this helps. :)
