    Answer for #1...

    1) With OE open go to Tools-->Options-->Security Tab
    2) Uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus "

    * Be warned that you will be opening yourself up to potential virus infections by doing this...

Hi Karles - Welcome to the world of XP - you won't regret it, but it may take a little time to get aquainted :)

Re. OE attachments - in OE Tools > Options > Security and uncheck ' Do not allow attachments .........'

In Nero go Recorder > Erase rewritable

    Thanks

    :D
Sorted OE but surely if I only open attachements from who I know it is not a danger?? as I would never open one from anonymous source??
Pete I sure hope you are right [that I will get used to XP.
Nero just tells me it is not an erasable disc [it is a DVD-Writer and the CD I am trying to erase is just a standard one which I used to take my personal files out of the other computer!!! Having transfered these now to here I would like to have it back blank!!!
    Thanks Karles

Even if the file attachments are from someone you know they could have gotten infected. Does your Antivirus product scan E-Mails with file attachments? If not then you should not open the attachments even if it's someone you know...IMO (In My Opinion)

What I do sometimes is save the file to a folder (call it anything you like...I call mine folder "Scan ") on my "Desktop" then I right-click on folder and select "Scan for viruses... ". Only takes an extra couple minutes.

    Maybe I'm a little paranoid...hehehehe:D

It certainly is a danger and especially if you aren't running good AV software. Nothing specifically to do with XP though.

There are at least a dozen active virus products right now that can 'spoof' and email and send it. That is, they can put the name of the owner of an infected PC in the From line of an email without the PC owner knowing anything about it and send an infected attachment. Some can even infect A and send an email using entries in A's address book as both the From and the To addresses.

I got one this morning from a friend who would certainly never intend to send a dangerous attachment. My guess is she had no idea about the thing and may not even be the person who is infected. I sent her a warning anyway and suggested she do an online scan just in case she was hit by a virus that managed to disable here AV protection while making it appear to still be working.

    You can also get MailWasher.

With it you can pre-screen the mail right on the server. My MailWasher has got several e-mails that contained a Virus in the last few days.

You can then delete them right OFF OF THE SERVER without downloading them.

I myself get rid of at least a dozen TRASH e-mails a day with MailWasher.

And as someone else mentioned make sure your Anti-Virus is set to check ALL e-mail. Both in and out.

Some say that is redundant but it is just a little added saftey.
