I run Mozilla 1.5 and my AV is eTrust EZ Antivirus.

When I run the AV, my log shows the following:

    Scanning file(s)...
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\o4x8wopt.slt\Cache\_CACHE_MAP_ - unable to open file - not scanned.
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\o4x8wopt.slt\Cache\_CACHE_001_ - unable to open file - not scanned.
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\o4x8wopt.slt\Cache\_CACHE_002_ - unable to open file - not scanned.
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\o4x8wopt.slt\Cache\_CACHE_003_ - unable to open file - not scanned.
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\o4x8wopt.slt\Mail\pop.ca.inter.net\junklog.html - unable to open file - not scanned.
    C:\Program Files\Computer Associates\eTrust EZ Armor\eTrust EZ Antivirus\VIRUSLOG.TXT - unable to open file - not scanned.

Why cannot the AV scan these files and is there anything bad that can live in there?

    Thanks

    Hi mdinnick,
The VIRUSLOG.TXT file dosn't matter, but its a shame you cannot scan the Mozilla files...
have you tried doing the virus scan directly after rebooting, ie before you have launched Mozilla?
    best wishes, HJ.

These "Cache" files in Mozilla are primarily to "re-load" sites you previously visited more rapidly... verse re-downloading the information from the site. I've not heard of "vulnerability" stemming from information contained in the files. If "active" status is why they are not being read, just close the browser when running your AV.

    Side Question....
Are you using the recently released "free version" of eTrust EZ Antivirus? How do you like it, any install, compatability problems? Good default settings or required much tweaking? Thinking about installing it on kids w95..... if I can unwind "Norton SW's" without creating more problems.

Thanks for the info on the cache.

Regarding ezTrust. I started with the free Computer Associates AV (whosse name I forget), and when they phased that out a couple of years ago, stuck with them for the paid version, as the annual cost was under $US 10.00

I have used both McAfee and Symantic, as they were installed on new computers.

I found them nothing but trouble, and if you can believe it, was never able to purchase the product when the "free" time expired. Talk about user-unfriendly web site. I had my money in hand, waiting to spend it with them, and couldn't do it.

ezTrust is a great AV. There is probably 5 updates a week which I down load and install.

Whole programme is less than 10 mg, and it has never interfered or slowed down or ******* up any application I may run.

    regards,

    Michael

Thanks Michael for the info, much appreciated.
Have you had a chance to read Arie's post on this software... they are offering it free. Offer runs to June 30, 2004, so when your subscription runs out, sign your wife up as new customer... just a suggestion. :p
If you don't have one of them sweet things all of us guys lovingly refer to as our wife, what's your dog's name? :D

also been using eTrust EZ Antivirus since the free days when it was called "InnoculateIT "...
I agree with Michael, it's an excellent AV - particularly for puny computers like this old Compaq (32MB RAM, 100MHz P1) as it's lightweight on resources. It just sort of sits there and works...
you get a real time check on file opens and closes - and boot sector monitoring - while it sits in the system tray; or can open it into a full blown window (intuitive UI similar to Windows Explorer) if you want to scan a drive or a selection of files. Plus it goes onto the right-click context menu of almost everything for a quick once-over of a particular file while you're concentrating on something else.
And that's about all it does - ie singularly lacking in "nuke the PC" buttons...
The nearest it's ever given me to a disaster was when it met a floppy for setting up HDDs - it didn't like the boot sector and proceded to get rid of it even though the write protect notch was "protecting" the floppy - it just blazed on through. Didn't think that was possible up to then:rolleyes: that was a while back, I notice now they've taken to putting extremely clear warnings about this!
setting up wasn't too bad; maintaining: the autodownload thing for new defs can throw a wobbly when the internet is busy or bitty cross-pond. But it doesn't do anything evil, you just have to have another shot at it.
    best wishes, HJ.

    Hi Hugh Jarss

    Thanks for the additional information.
My only hesitation with eTrust EZ Antivirus free package, is it comes bundled with a firewall (ZA /version?). I use Kerio.. very simply, behaves well and is free.

    Hi Dennis
yes it is a shame it comes bundled; I've just been through the other thread again and haven't seen anything about anyone trying to install only the AV element of the package. As CA sell the two products separately it might be possible...
but according to peoples' posts it looks as if you would have to ditch Kerio... or, take your chances about uninstalling the firewall part of the CA "suite" cleanly.
I used to run an early version of ZA(2.1.44) alongside EZ antivirus; when I pulled out the ZA out to try Kerio, it didn't come out perfectly. But the bits it left behind didn't seem to interfere with installing Kerio. It left a dud entry on startup tasks as seen by msconfig - but checking the box to try re-enabling ZA (as a test) doesn't get anything running (apart from a message saying it's not there anymore!). So just left registry key(s) behind, perhaps?
    best wishes, HJ.
