I don't know what's doing this but when I Open a file from the internet instead of "Save as..." the file doesn't save to the temp right. For example is i open a zip file, when I try to extract them, it tells me that it can't open the file in the temp dir.

Don't know for sure but 'maybe' Winzip, or whatever you use to unzip, knows that temps are sometimes cleared and would rather you unzip them to a more permanent folder. Better to save zips and extract them to a proper folder anyway.

When you 'Open' a file from the Inernet this effectively runs the file from the source server - 'Save As' downloads the file to your HD to be run as and when.

    Suggest you use 'Save As'.

    Batookee,
did this suddenly start happening - like, are there file types you know you could once open from source, and have now lost that ability?
(you say "example" in your post, but zip files are a bit of a special case)
I somehow lost the ability to open wav files from source a while back - never really got to the bottom of what made it happen - solved it by upgrading from IE5.5 to IE6 (IE6 has better options for this anyway).
If you let us know what file types are affected - and perhaps what version of IE you run - might make things a bit clearer?
If you can't open sound / video clips from source, for example, that can get quite tedious...
    best wishes, HJ.

Hugh Jarss--If I understand correctly, you no longer saw the window that offers options to Save or Open when you downloaded a .zip file. Normally that has nothing to do with which file type is involved, but taking .zip as the example, if that happens in the future:
Click Start|Settings|Folder Options|File Types|scroll to whatever your unzip file is (like WinZip file for WinZip)|highlight it|click Edit|check the box "Confirm open on Download "|OK. Can't remember, maybe a reboot is needed.

    not exactly Jim,
Batookee cited the zip files as example - my problem was with wavs (I got the window with the options but the "Open" option was permanently greyed out.)
I was fishing for a bit more detail from Batookee to determine whether relevant to his troubles or not (not wanting to fire off a red herring)
Upon re-reading it's probably something else anyway - looks like Batookie has the Open option, but it's misfiring somehow? Interesting to discover what file type(s) are affected... I presume more than just the one, from the wording "example" of the original post
    best wishes all, HJ.

    hey,

Acctualy it's not only zip files but any "one-click-download" files like real player streams or bittorrents for example; they do the same thing. To my understanding they are temporarily put in a folder until the program opens them.

My browser also stopped redirecting. For example when you log in to Windows BBS and it tells you that it will redirect you in a few seconds or an other example when you're waiting for a download on a download site. I always have to click to be redirected.

Maybe these problems are somewhow linked.
I don't know if this has any importance but I have McAffee Internet Security Suite 2004 installed.

    Thank you

What's the exact error message? What OS? Try deleting your temporary internet files (including offline content). Also, delete all files in your temp folder.
    Windows 98 - C:\windows\temp
    Windows XP - C:\documents and settings\your username\local settings\temp
This is assuming windows is installed to your c drive. If not, change the path accordingly. Once you've done this, try downloading a file and see what happens. If no joy, search your TIF's for the file. If you find it, copy it to another location and see if you can open it from there. Post back as to what happens when you do this. Can you download a file in the normal way using save as instead of open?
I suppose this could somehow be tied to the redirecting problem but can't say for sure. To fix that, in IE click tools>internet options>security. At the top, where you see the four different zones, click on internet and then on the custom button. Look in the list for Allow META REFRESH. Set it to enable. If it's already enabled disable it and click ok. Close IE, reopen IE and go back and reset it to enable to see if that will toggle it back on. If your have this sight added to your trusted zone then you have to set it there instead. You should probably do it in both to be sure. If your using XP have you tried system restore?

Glad to hear it. How about your redirecting problem?
