    Hello all!

I have tried to find out if there is a limitation to the HDD size that my motherboard can handle.

It says nothing on the subject in the EP8KTA3-manual.

I have searched both the EPOX and VIA homepages but found no information on the subject.

The only information available is from the manual:

Can I go ahead and buy a larger HDD (120GB) or am I in for a surprise?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

I may be way off here but I believe that the limitations on HDD size is determined by the BIOS rather than the motherboard.

It looks as though you are running a fairly new system and shouldn't have a problem with a 120 gig HDD. I just installed one the other day on a Sony that's about a year old and actually used the recovery disk. The old drive was 60 gig and Sony had it partitioned to 16 gig and 40 gig (not sure where the other 4gig went but I suspect a hidden partition for restore points). The new one went in with 2 partitions of 16 gig and 100 gig (again the mystery of the missing 4 gig).

Anyhow, check to see if your BIOS will support 120 gig.

    Hi Kevin!

My system is a bit older than Yours, two and a half years but I hope it will work.
I really don´t need 120 GB but buying anything less than 80-120 GB, well, then You´ll miss the sweet spot in terms of GB/cost.

I looked for any BIOS limitations in the EP8KTA3-manual but didn´t find anything.

Maybe I looked in the wrong place which sends me off to the Award homepage.

    Thanks,
    Christer

I´m back from my chase for information.

I have the latest BIOS version (030409 or 09APR2003 the other way around) which I flashed prior to installing WinXP.

I have downloaded all previous BIOS updates too and checked the release notes but nothing on HDD size limitations.

My conclusion is that it should be okey ...... ...... which I soon may have to file under "Famous Last Words ".

Hi Christer- You'll be fine. A BIOS as current as yours has INT13 BIOS extensions that will support a drive to 137GB. No problem unless you are going to go FAT32 for some reason, then you would have to chop it up a bit. NTFS will handle it easily. Have fun with the new rig. Clydeo22.

    clydeo22,
    thanks for the encouragement!

    I haven´t bought it yet and haven´t decided on 80GB or 120GB.

I have noticed one important difference apart from the respective sizes, the 80GB has a 1 year warranty and the 120GB has 3 years ...... ...... kind of makes the decision easier, doesn´t it!

Those two are Hitachi 7K250 drives but other manufacturers have the same policy. If you want a decent warranty then you have to spend more money.
