I have just changed my computer to upgrade.I kept my high end sound card which I use for studio work.It is an Audiowerks2 and worked fine in all respects previosly.I now find that the card works fine except when i am in Kazaa Desktop and want to playback an MP3, the sound goes into an endless interference loop and I have to reboot.I have already disabled the Sound max on board sound manager in the Bios as I was instructed by the Games software company (to fix an earlier problem with the sound on games )Is this an Explorer problem or some other interface with the internet ???????
    Any ideas?

Kazaa has some defective codecs and is not really a very good player. If that is your only sound problem, use another player.

Thanks Abraxas....i checked into the sound issues further last night and the problem does seem to be bigger than just Kazaa. When I download even the smallest of wave files the computer playback defaults to the Microsoft media player in the left side of the favorites window. This is the same as my previous box, which worked fine. Now the wave file is played back coughing and spluttering even on the second playback.I use this feature a lot in my music/recording activities, so its really important for me to try and figure why this super juiced computer cant do what my old computer could do with the same sound card.Is there still a sound manager lurking in the Dell box that needs to be disabled ' cos its causing a conflict or something elsr that is part of the standard setup which doesnt work with a PCI sound card ????
    Again ...any thoughts
    Thank you

Try removing a couple of those crappy Kazaa codecs.

    Find and delete:
    mcdsmpeg.ax and mcspmpeg.ax

I did that Abraxas and I dont think it made any difference.I have also uninstalled Kazaa.I have noticed on further study that the windows media player will play back correctly on the 2nd time ie pressing play after the first attempt coughs through the wave file.I've tried fiddling with the buffer times ( not recommended by the media player ) and that makes no difference even at large buffer sizes. The fact that it does play back on the 2nd try is hopeful I suppose, but what do you tweak to make it perform correctly on the first playback?
Thank you very much by the way for helping me on this thing.I'm pretty hopeless at this stuff.

    Two suggestions.

    - get rid of the masses of spyware Kazaa put on your PC. I'd use both Ad-aware and Spybot. Download, update, run ad-aware. Then download, update, run Spybot.

    - try another player. You can get irfanview as a free download. Primarily a picture viewer/simple editor but it can also be set to play most sound files. You will need the plugins (also free download) to do some of them though. When you get it installed, options~set file associations and try it with .wav and any others you want. If it works properly, then possibly Kazaa (man, I hate that app) did some damage that is causing Media Player problems for you.

In addition to what Newt mentioned, you might take a closer look at all your audio and video codecs in Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers.

Check the properties and the About of any codecs that make you suspicious and remove any that may have belonged to Kazaa. All XP codecs can be reinstalled by updating the driver, so it is better to remove too many than too few.

Thank you both for your help.Your shared knowledge is very much appreciated.I got things working by using the Real player as the player of choice when listening to wave files on the net.
I can start to concentrate on making music again.
    Thank you:)
