Under W98SE, I created a FAT 32 logical partition using Partition Magic 8 (create logical + label + format) on my second physical disk. It is shown as L. It is preceded by partitions H, I, J and K and followed by a hidden FAT32 partition (which I use as a backup copy of a partition on my first physical disk) and an NTFS partition which I use with W2k in a dual boot environment.

In Windows Explorer, L does not show up. I get H I J K M N O. When I click on M, I get an error message (freely translated into English) saying "M is inaccessible. A peripheral attached to the system is not working properly ". N is the NTFS partition. O is now my CD Burner (used to be N before the creation of the new partition).

Did I forget something when I created the partition?

    Thanks for your help

There is a limit to the number of partitions that Win98 can handle
    - I think it may be 5 -- anyone help ?
    regards

Further to Merlin's reply, I haven't found any tip concerning a limitation in the number of partitions in an extended partition yet.

Having deleted the "invisible" partition, I notice that 6 partitions in the extended partition are visible : a mixture of FAT, FAT32 and NTFS partitions.

On the other hand, coming back to the configuration mentioned previously, the "invisible" partition under 98SE is perfectly visible under W2k (remember I have a dual boot system).

    I'm still stuck.

    Hi,
running W98FE I have C: right up to Q: (15 logical drives split between 3 physical drives 6+8+1)... all are "visible" OK to both Windows and DOS prompt stuff. But they are all "normal" FAT32 (except one which is FAT16), there's no NTFS or hidden partition involved.
how do you make a hidden partition, pls.?
    best wishes, HJ.

    Problem solved.

Windows Explorer did not show the "invisible" partition under W98SE because, for an inknown reason, in Tweak UI the corresponding letter was not ticked ( "My Computer" tab). It dawned on me when I could see the partition under DOS and W2k.

This answers Hugh's question on hiding partitions. Another way is through Partition Magic with a right-click over the target partition.

    Thanks to all.
