After the last virus attack with an email supposedly from MS, I have been very leary. I get them every day from MS Net Services, MS Customer Service, MS Corporation Program Security Center and more lookalikes.

    I've been deleting these unread

I also get boxes pointing into my Tray to click here for latest upgrades.

Am I right to be wary? I can log on to MS and download any upgrades I need.

I have received the same and have had attacks as well from Microsoft. I personnaly do not believe it is Microsoft but very inventive geeks. I use Mailwasher(free) and view some emails like that before I receive them any more. I am getting to the point that I just assume its bad even under the cover of Microsoft and simply go to their update and if its real and important it will be there.:)

One of the best ways to spot a bogus email from "Microsoft" is if the email has an attachment. MS says they do not send attachments.
And you can read any email in Outlook Express (especially suspect email) without fear if
    1) You turn off the Preview Pane
    2) You highlight the email, click File|Properties|Details tab|Message Source button.

    tenbob,

I also get a lot of the emails from "Microsoft ". My Norton's AV catches each one and I delete right away. The notification in your tray is probably Microsoft's update program running. I get my notification of updates in my system tray (by the clock). I'm on cable, so it checks on every boot. If that's the case, those updates are fine. I have installed all the updates from there without any problems.

Microsoft's security emails are always signed with PGP, and as noted, Microsoft NEVER EVER would send attachments!
