I am receiving this error on a Dell Laptop. The HD is covered by warranty. The data however, wasn't backed up in the last four months.

My gut feeling is a dead HD. The BIOS see's the HD during the boot process, but I can't seem to get access to it.

Does anyone have any tips or trick for getting access to the data ?

    Thanks in advance
    Don

In the past, when I had a drive starting to die, I was able to boot to DOS with a Win98 startup disk and was able to copy data from a partition (D:) that was still accessible even though the C: partition was fooked. I used XCOPY32.EXE, a standard DOS program, to copy data to another hard drive.

If you boot to DOS and cannot access the data, I'd say your drive is hosed.
