I'm using XP Pro with SP1 (and a heap of other updates) installed.. I recently had some kind of boot sector virus and ended up having to reinstall XP. Now that I have a clean install of XP I'm trying to use M$ Backup (in System Tools), but after 2mins of backing up, and being told I have around 2hrs till done, it hangs at the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService.NT AUTHORITY\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\CTLs

which, when I manually go to, is empty (yes, "show hidden files" is selected in folder options)..

I left this running overnight, and went to bed .. still not complete when I woke, and hangs in the same spot each time I try to backup. :( Does anyone have a fix for this?

    Hello DanaB,

This folder is associated with the blaster worm in some form, sounds familiar in that context.

After making sure you can either recreate this folder or copy out, get rid of it. May have to do that in safe mode. If its something that XP needs, it will recreate it. Lots of folders like that, the Links folder for one.

And remember that you have System Restore if you have to come back to the point prior to deleting the folder.

See if that solves your problem.

    Regards - Charles

Thx for the reply, Charles, but no go :(

I followed your suggestion but M$ backup seems to be looking for a folder within the CTL's folder and still hangs here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService.NT AUTHORITY\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\CTLs\

Any idea what the "CTL" stands for? I haven't found any other help elsewhere either, tho I'm still looking .. I'm determined LOL.
