I am a relatively new user of OE having just moved over from Netscape Communicator so I am still finding my way around. Some things are different ...

    1. How do I arrange my messages in TIME order not just DATE?

    2. Can messages be condensed under one heading rather than spread out individually?

    3. Netscape uses nicknames to identify addresses, can OE be configured to do the same thing?

    Can anyone help? Hopeful TIA

For a rundown on OE take a look at Inside Outlook Express

In answer to your questions -

    1. In Inbox click on the 'Received' column to sort by date & time. If the Received column is not showing right click on any of the column headings, select Columns and tick those columns you want to show.

    2. Not quite sure what you mean by this - all incoming messages go into the Inbox - you can drag them from there into any storage folder you want. Create new storage folders by right clicking Local Folders in the LH pane > New Folder.

BTW - to set up OE to display what you want on the screen View > Layout

    3. In your Address Book you can set up a nickname - or use the true name - Addresses > New > New Contact - nickname on this dialogue box. Also you can edit existing adresses via this route or by right clicking the name in the Contacts on the Main Screen (if showing) > Properties.

  3. to hide this advert.

    Thanks Pete. Very helpful.

I didn't word para 2. very clearly I'm afraid. What I meant to say was in Netscape one can group messages under the thread name
in date and time order and then collapse the thread, leaving a little plus sign against the first entry. The list of items under the thread can be viewed by clicking on the plus sign and collapsed again by clicking on the (now) minus sign. This saves an enormous amount of space on the Inbox screen. It's a visual thing.

I have assigned a nickname for all my contacts but when I use it it simply shows the nickname. There is no confirmation of the email address. It only shows when I press send ... too late then if I have used the wrong name! (Yeah, I know. I should be more careful!)

Finally, where do I find Inside Outlook Express? I don't see an entry for that anywhere.

    Pete,
An addendum to my last post: I clicked on your link to Inside Outlook Express and put it in my favourites folder. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Not a feature of OE - AFAIK
Double click on the nickname in the To: box of the New Message window to bring up the Address Book page for that contact with email address.

Well, in OE I use Message Rules to sort the mail into folders as it comes into the inbox. By default, it puts unread message counts in blue and opens subfolders with unread messages. I can close the tree by clicking on the little minus signs, or expand it by clicking on the plus signs. So, for example, any mail with "windowsbbs" in the From line automatically goes to the BBS subfolder of the Computer file. Any mail with "Hoyhoy" in the subject line goes straight to the Little Feat folder. If you are regularly corresponding with people, and you want to save all their messages together, set them up a file (right click on Inbox and select "new folder "- you can name it whatever you want) and use the message rules to automatically put the mail where you want it to go. The blue numbers will tell you if there is unread mail in a folder.

As for your address book, you can either click on the "to" box and scroll through until you find who you are looking for,( hold down the control key to highlight multiple recipients,) OR you can let the contact list show (click view then layout, I think) and, once it is showing in the bottom left of your screen, you can right click "Properties" , then "Name" on any you want to verify. (Or doubleclick to open a New Message to that person.)

Hope this all makes sense. I have a four year old who is going to lose his mind if I do not find his SpiderMan pajamas RIGHT THIS MINUTE and a 5 year old under the delusion that she is getting ice cream for a bed time snack when she didn't touch her supper. They will be asleep in 20 minutes and I will be able to resume having complete, uninterrupted, thoughts, then. Ha ha!

    HTH

    Johanna,
Thanks for the info and suggestions. I do appreciate the time you took to send them, despite the clamour from your children!

I have to say, as effective as your system appears, for both message handling and address book, it seems ponderous and repetitive when compared to NS/Communicator, but I guess it is what one gets used to.

The reason I stopped using Communicator is because of the SSL security protocols used by Netscape that conflict with Norton AntiVirus, my AV of choice. I have not yet fallen in love with OE.

I hope pyjamas and ice cream didn't make contact with each other!

    Lochinvar ;)
