It appears you have IE version 5.0. This is known to be one of the buggiest versions. I don't have a handy list of the bugNfixes past patches had to be issued for but I do recall it was quite a long list. You need to update your IE version and or apply what ever patches or updates are available for your version.

While it may be possible to fix your current link problem, in my opinion, the fastest fix is an updated version [suggest minimum 5.5]. You'll find that sites may continue to give you problems since they lean toward being scripted for the newer versions of IE.

Security, is another consideration. IE 5 is definitely lacking in this area for today's Internet Risks.

    Hi Goddez 1
    Thanks for the advise!
Do I have to uninstall IE5 in order to install IE 5.5?
If so I don't think I know how.

No, you don't have to uninstall version 5 to install version 5.5 or even 6.

Since I run version 6 on both Win98 and WinXP without any problems, you can choose either. Just be aware that 5.5 is going to have to be updated sooner or later to 6 when Microsoft decides it's tired of messing with older versions.

    Hi sonk909,

Noahdfear was just trying to point out that the link you provided is a deadend and he/she supplied an updated link that goes to your refererenced site.

I noticed the period is caught in your link [at the end] and that is preventing the url to click through.

    Thank You Both!
    Miz And goddez 1
Please don't be annoyed by my silly questions, but I'm a bit
leary about upgrading, I understand upgrading to a higher
version without first uninstalling the old causes lots of problems.
Also what happens to programs I have added? would they be OK?
    would everything still be there?
    gee thanks

Upgrading to a newer version without uninstalling the old applies in some cases but not this one. What you're probably thinking of is operating systems - upgrading to a later version of Windows by installing the new over the old is seldom recommended or completely successful - but upgrading to a later version of Internet Explorer is usually successful. I've done it numerous times without any problems.

Here's a tip, though: It's a good idea to shut down every program you can before starting the upgrade, especially any anti-virus program you may have running in the background. Leaving an anti-virus program running is the most common cause of problems when both upgrading IE and when installing Windows updates and patches.

I've never lost any data or experienced any problems with installed programs doing an IE upgrade - and I started with version 3-point-something so I've done plenty of them.

    Hi Miz!
Thank you for today's mail, You've restored my self esteem.
I thought I made such a fool of myself that you've all dropped me.
thank you, I think this is a good start to the day.
I usually go to ctrl+alt+delete and end all task except systray and explorer.
I shut down anti virus from the task bar.I can't think of anything else.
    Take care

sonk909 - you didn't even come close. Your problems were very normal for lots and lots of users. Your questions were very reasonable and have been asked often on here. The busted link is a common happening - even to some of the old timers on the forum.

And the only way you could get dropped around here is to be really rude & nasty. Normal, everyday goofs happen to us all.

The CAD and closing all except the two items you mentioned is a good one. But not so good to be unprotected while connected to the internet if you can avoid it so a download of the upgrade to a folder, disconnecting the modem, and then doing the upgrade install is probably your safest option.

    Hi Newt!
Thank you for your kind words.
I have taken Miz's advice and downloded IE6.
It's OK I had no problem downloading it.
I could not find the file at MC downloaded page. I went to CNet,
they directrd me to another site. Unfortunately for me these
people have placed spyware on my site. They have shut down
my antivirus program.and as soon as I click on some new subject they fill my favourite folder with loads of addresses. I'm now trying to uninstall it. I have found the file at microsoft.( I guess I was unable to find it the first time because of the problem with my browser then.
    Take care of the fish!

    Hi sonk909,

What Newt said goes double for me. I'm sorry if I made you feel foolish! That wasn't my intention. Only wanted to verify what you were trying and help with what wasn't working for you. But Miz came in with GREAT advice :) and made the fix much easier and faster.

Now for the spyware! If you don't already have them, get Spybot and AdAware . Read the tutorials so you know what to look for, update their reference files, then run Spybot first ( in advanced mode), then AdAware. Delete all they find.CWShredder may be needed also.

    Adaware configuration......

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the
reference file by using the "webupdate ".
    Then ........
Make sure the following settings are made and on (green)

From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth
    scan "
    Then......
Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these
options on: "Scan within archives" , "Scan active
processes ", "Scan registry ", "Deep scan registry" , "Scan my
IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files "
    Then.....
Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning
engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during
scanning" ...........then........ "Cleaning engine" and tick
"Let windows remove files in use at next reboot "

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

If you have any problems, post back here. Some will gladly help!

    Dear Noahdfear!!
    thanks heap!!
I never thought what I said to Miz would affect you guys so.I'm sorry.
Now a little explanation!. In my first post, I tried to be precise.I rambled,
on, and on, when I tried to send it, I had too many characters.
So I took some out, and put some in. and to crown it all I dropped
that URL on you guys Forgive me.
I have AVG that scans every day! I have AdAware, that scans when I
ask it to.Last night it removed 60 objects, some were folders, files and
registry.thanks for the tips on using AdAware; I've always used smart
system scan,(and if that found 60!I hate to think what else is there)
I'll take a look at Spybot & Cwshredder today. In Newt's Post, he mentioned
disconnecting the Modem? I don't know how that's done?
I have already removed the villian.and hope later today to Download from Microsoft. I did get a bonus though, IE5 is working again.

    with much thanks!!

    GREAT!! :D

Newt only meant that you should download the file, save it to your computer, then disconnect from the internet before shutting down your AV to install it.
You mentioned that your AV was disabled. If unsure that it's working properly, uninstall it then reinstall and update.

In Newt's Post, he mentioned disconnecting the Modem? I don't know how that's done?

My bad and thanks to noahdfear for picking up on it.

I always like a belt & suspenders approach and when I wanted to be SURE I wasn't going to be connected to the internet, I unplugged the phone line from the PC (or extrenal modem in my case). But all I was trying to do is make sure I did not have an internet connection and removing the phone line was probably overkill.

    Hi There Newt!!
    I got Your message!
I ment no harm in asking noahdfear, about your post.
I missed it last night, when I was answering you.
and I saw it while I was reading his post today.
when I think of it, I know you're right. I think the spyware
was put into my computer after, I downloaded.Because I had
disconnected from the internet to install. These people had
me connect again in order to complete the installation.
    My best to you!
Goddez 1 Thanks for your help!
    I missed you earlier today!
now you guys know who you're dealing with!!
for one thing "I talk too much" this is why my posts are always too long.
    bye for now the best

    Your most welcome. :D
I've been peeking in here from time to time. Be thankful I seem to be going through a "relative short, blunt phase" [when ever possible]. Ordinarily, I could lay claim to the posts that are way to long and I'd give you a run for your money.
