I don't know whether I should be posting this question here or in the Internet Explorer Forum. I guess someone will tell me if I am wrong.

I have just installed Win98SE to a newly formatted HDD. No other software has been installed.

When I attempt to install IE6, all seems well at first, but then, before any file copy actually occurs, I get an error, The details shows:
"IE6WZD has caused an Invalid Page Fault in module SETUPAPI.DLL "

Only Explorer and Systray are running.

Searching on the Web returns very few hits of any nature for the Google search "IE6WZD SETUPAPI.DLL' .
Renamed SETUPAPI.DLL and replaced it with a copy from another system. Same error.
Renamed SETUPAPI.DLL and attempted to install IE6. Install created a new SETUPAPI.DLL, but the same error occurred.
Attempted the same procedure using other copies (from different sources) of both IE6 and IE5.5. Same error.
Ran IE install from Safe Mode. Same error

I have run System File Checker. It showed a problem with SETUPX.DLL. I copied SETUPX.DLL from another Win98SE system. I still received the same message from sfc. Checked the other system, and it also showed the same error for SETUPX.DLL from sfc. Checked another system with the same result.
Both of these other systems have happily run IE6 install.
Copied the SETUPX.DLL to the problem machine anyway. Same error during installation.

The only suggestion that I have read on the Web is to delete all references to 'Internet Explorer' or 'Iexplore' from the registry.
I have not yet tried this.

    Any suggestions please!

    Hi GeoffG,

I've done a little searching also and the best I found was to uninstall the version of IE you already have installed.

Go to the Add/Remove panel in the Control Panel and highlight Internet Explorer and tools. Click Remove. A maintaince box will appear. Choose to restore the previous version. This will uninstall what you have. Just follow the dialog until its through. You may have to reboot. Not sure but you'll be prompted if needed. Afterwards install IE6.

    Hi Dopey and Clydeo22

Thanks for your replies and assistance.

Yes, I uninstalled the original version of IE. This did not improve the situation.
I then obtained other copies of SETUPX.DLL and tried the IE install again (after rebooting of course). Same error.

I figured that the problem was not one of either IE or SETUPX.DLL, so I reformatted and installed Win98SE again, and then attempted to install IE6. The same error occurred.

I obtained another 98SE installation disk, reformatted and reinstalled Win98SE.
    IE6 installed perfectly!

So, I again reformatted, and again reinstalled, this time using the original 98SE install disk. Again, IE6 installed perfectly.

So, some time later, no wiser, and as usual in a state of wonder, I am at the point that I should have been some time ago! (But thankful that it works.)

Go figure. Thanks again for your help.

Glad to hear things worked out for you.

Sometimes I think reinstalls have a mind of their own and like to be a little problematic. :)

You said: "Sometimes I think reinstalls have a mind of their own and like to be a little problematic. "

Even worse, I do not think that it is limited to reinstalls, by Jove.
But perhaps I've just been unlucky.

    Have a good day!
