Lately I have noticed that when I go to the help section of XP that I receive a pop up message that it cant find the glossary file. This is whenever I click on a highlighted item. How can I recover the glossary file?
    thanks

Have you been using any registry cleaners lately? Look here
under XP fixes, "fixWinXPhelp" if applicable.

    gloosary file

    Thanks for the response
I use Norton One button Checkup once a week and that has a feature for fixing the registry. Other then that I do not fool with registry. I have used Norton for years and this problem only happened in the last month or so. I cant tell exactly when it went awry since I don't use help that much. :)

Try doing a System Restore to a month or so ago.
    Norton didn't do it.

    Hello ocalas2,

*Try doing a System Restore to a month or so ago*

You have to be careful here with System Restore, it will "undo" MS patches and app installs and some user files as well.

What you can do to help diagnose the problem is go back to a point just before the problem if not to far back and see if that resolves the problem. You can always "undo" the restore and come back to the present.

Johanna - does Norton keep backups of what it removes? I know you have faith in it but still.... :)

    Regards - Charles

I'm not familiar with the one button checkup- I still use Norton Utilities, mostly for Win Doctor. It keeps backups (and has an "undo ") With Utilities, almost anything can be recovered from the Norton Protected Recycle Bin. To be honest, I have had more difficulties using Mike Flynn's famous Clean Up apps than Norton has ever caused.

I have never lost data using SR, but you are right, sometimes updates and apps get messed up. A Belarc will indicate all MS updates and the dates of install , in case something needs done again. I was just thinking that trying the easy stuff first might correct the problem without having to do any registry tinkering.

I found a glossary.chm file on my comp, in c/Windows/help, and it's only 245K, so perhaps I could send it to ocalas2 and he could restore it? Did you do a search for it, ocalas2? Maybe it just got misplaced?

Thank you all for the suggestions and help. I disabled System restore because I use GoBack. I should look in there for the files(brain cramp). I have done a lot of things that I would loose if I use either, but I can look in GoBack for a file or 2. I cant go back as far as where it happened because I don't know how long ago that was. The actual file that the message says is missing is glossary.hlp. I have glossary.chm in my system, but if I try to open it I receive a script error msg. I have a jpg of the actual msg but I cant add attachments. I am in the middle of a host of things and bussier then a cat eating paste, but need to find time for this.

*but I can look in GoBack for a file or 2*

I forgot as well that System Restore can be used this way for system files: restore to a time when it exists - copy out to removable, undo the restore to the "present" and reload the missing file.

ocala, i had problems with help and support also. it was caused by a patch from windows update. i can't tell you which one it was because it was about 6 months ago. i do know that one of the newer updates can give you problems with help and support also. do some searchs on the the microsoft site to find out which update causes the problem and if you have it installed remove it.there are 2 updates that you have to install 1ST BEFORE you install the update that causes the problem. those updates are 323255 and 811630 maybe if you just look up those 2 updates they can lead you to some infomation on the problem.

Well I looked in my goBack and could not find any hlp files in there. Had to go from the tray to get into goback since going from the start freezes my puter for some reason. Guess I'l have to take it out and put it back in. As for p spino suggestion, I have the 2 files in that he speaks of but I have no Idea of the file that these have to go ahead of. Will have check them all?
