For some reason (for the past three weeks) I am getting occassional freezes. I have no idea what may be causing this, and actually would like to learn how to find the conflict. Here is what I know, so far-

The service control manager is showing an error message below:

"The Application Management service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found."

I checked on the help site indicated and got:

    Details
    Product: Windows Operating System
    ID: 7023
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Version: 5.0
    Component: System Event Log
    Symbolic Name: EVENT_SERVICE_EXIT_FAILED
Message: The %1 service terminated with the following error:
    %2

    Explanation
The specified service stopped unexpectedly with the error indicated in the message. The service closed safely.

    "User Action
    To troubleshoot the error:

Review the error information displayed in the message.
To display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered, at the command prompt, type
    sc query service name
The information displayed can help you troubleshoot possible causes for the error. "

I have no idea what that means.

The other problem I have noticed with this is that when I attempt to restart the computer, using the ctrl, alt and reset- I get a standby mode, which fails, and the only way to restart is to turn power off. The computer then restarts with a windows error check and then runs okay until the next freeze. I was always able to restart the computer in the past.

Also have run Norton and Reg First Aid to no avail.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I feel like I am back with my old Mac.

    Bill

I did find that site- and I leave my computer shaking with a nervous breakdown. I have not yet found a way to find this
so-called patch that Microsoft offers. There is no way to contact Microsoft and no search name for this patch. I spent 60 minutes last night looking for it, looking how to contact them, contacting Sony (my PC) and all I do is go in circles.

Do you have any idea where I could get such a patch?

    Thanks

Hi LooBoo: Hey, don't have a nervous breakdown, if you do, you will never get your computer fixed.

I can understand your confusion, as it appears that this fix is not published as a fix, only an explanation. At least that's what I got after 30 minutes of searching.

It also appears that any XP installation prior to March 27, 2003 could suffer from this same problem, so you are not alone.

I think, what they are saying is call them, (800) 936-5700, pay the $35.00 support fee, and maybe they'll give you the fix, and maybe, if its their fault, they will cancel the charge.

Near as I can tell, the only other way to get the file is to reinstall XP on top of itself, and when the installation program goes online for the "Dynamic Updates ", the new file, Update.exe, will be installed.

There appears to be a way to download the new "Dynamic Updates" file for corporate use, but it looks like, to me at least, you still have to reinstall XP for your problem to be corrected. I could be wrong, but it looks like they had the fix posted at one time but it is not available as a separate download anymore.

Maybe Arie can chase this one down, I think I'd wait to see if there is some additional input on this board.

Wish you a lot of luck.

With quite a few of the patches that only are needed on certain systems, Microsoft will make the patch available to you at no charge once a tech has determined that you really do need it. But they are not available for general download.

Martin - AFAIK they will not charge you for the patch and will not charge you for the call needed for them to figure out if you need it or not.

LooBoo, looks pretty clear, give msft a shout at the toll free number, see if they'll give you the patch at N.C.
