I recently had to reinstall Windows ME and there are sereral applications I no longer use. Windows Installer, however, continues to try and reinstall these apps, Access 2002 for example. The computer is functioning but continually cancelling Windows Installer is irritating.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi welcome to windows BBS
    whats running at startup?
Go to Start > Run, and paste the following into the box, then click OK:You may have to do so with the first line and then the second

    regedit /e C:\run.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

That will export the contents of the Registry Machine Run key to a C:\Run.txt file
Please do a copy and paste of that Run.txt file, and show us its contents.

Thanks for the response, just read the posting and unfortunately have to leave for an appointment. Will post the contents of the Run.txt file as soon as I can.

    Thanks again for the response.

Don't know what I was thinking , anyway the run text will give us an idea or whats happening.. for later suggestions

I should have said for a first thing to do .. go start search for files and folders
    wininit
there will be several results.. look for > wininit.ini <
    spelling is very important here.
right click on it and chose open with and chose notepad
    Copy paste the contents here.

    Hello Robert,

I have one suggestion, get rid of LoadQM.exe, I mean keep it from starting up - thoroughly useless and a big load on your system. Look up Task monitor as well, forgot what it was, I'm on XP at the moment.

Seems that some of the startups shouldn't be startups, but on-demand; the Iomega stuff, for instance.

If you don't want to use msconfig, or you find that MS stuff - which LoadQM is, won't stay stopped, you can use this free startup manager by Mike Lin http://www.mlin.net/

Take a look at your other startups and look them up here: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Another site to look up startups http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

    Regards - Charles
