Due mto a hard drive failure I have had to replace my hard drive and reinstall everything. After installing all the drivers and the main software for my system I have one persistent problem. When I start the system I get a message from windows that it has found a new device, Universal Serial Bus.

I have installed everything that I installed when I built the system, treid removing the usb drivers from windows in the device manager and restarting but it comes up with the same message. I have an asus p4b533 motherboard and am using windows 98SE. I have installed what is called the intel application installer (infinst_autol.exe), the audio drivers, and a file that installs USB 2.0 (by orange ware). I still get the same message.

    Anyone have any ideas?

If you have USB enable in the BIOS, it will be detected. Did you install the motherboard drivers, as that board has USB 2, your orange ware may be the wrong ones.

    usb device

I have installed the drivers for the motherboard. In device manager it shows 3 usb root hubs, 3 usb universal host controlers and 1 generic USB hub. They all say that they are working correctly (if you can believe windows). That is the number that is should show as this motherboard has a total of 6 USB ports.

Even with these all showing as being working, the other one shows up on startup looking for a driver and I have to click cancel to get it to go away. I have tried pointing it to the motherboard drivers but it will not accept them because they are in an exe and not an inf file.

    Usb device

I forgot to mention that I installed the orangeware driver in an attempt to solve this problem. The orangeware driver cam from asus's support center when I serched for drivers for the motherboard.

    Prblem solved (I think!!)

I think I may have stumbled onto a fix. I installed a Win 2000 USB 2.0 driver and the new device message did not show up on reboot. Yes I said I was using Win 98SE, but I was willing to try just about anything.

After I get a little more software installed I will try the usb devices and see if they work under these conditions. I will keep my fingers crossed.
