After checking my friend's hard drive on my computer I reconnected my IBM drive back but couldn't boot up.Tried a lot of things but could only boot up the system having my hard grive as secondary. Now the system works really slowly and I was told that the problem was in the IBM drive(apparently they all **** and another drive we tried worked just fine).Could that be the case and the only way out is to buy a new one?But what can be wrong with this one?

Take a look at the jumpers. Make sure it is set to Master, Standalone or Master without Slave.

It may not be being set as the right size by your BIOS.

    Try here:
    http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

I've found the IBM drives I have come across to be quite reliable (my main HDD).

PS: Check for spyware and viruses.

I have an ECS mainboard and every few months, it stops recognizing the hard drive. And, if I disconnect it and then reconnect it, I'm almost guaranteed that it won't be recognized. The only cure and the one that always works is to clear the CMOS.

As far as the IBM Deathstars, I mean Deskstars are concerned, my feeling is that the problems were limited to the 75GXP series. I still have a 75GXP running in a box - with that ECS board actually.

But if an IBM drive is bad, I'd think it would be more catastrophic -not just some flakey behavior like what you're getting.

I finally had a 180GXP die on me so I made the switch to Maxtor. But I used to always use IBM as they were always the fastest on the market. I think I'm the last one to jump ship from IBM and bring the flag with me - I don't know anyone who uses them anymore after all the bad PR they got. And I used to be a diehard IBM drive fan.

Thanx Chiles4!So,you reckon that the only way to get the hard drive recognized on the primary channel is to clear the CMOS?Ho do I do that and is it safe thing to do?I guess I need to disconnect the battery on the mainboard?
Thank you all for your replies.

I've tried to clear CMOS but didn't get nothing from it,my hard can only run on secondary channel and is very slow.
    Any other solutions to it?

Have you tried a different ribbon cable for the primary channel?

Do any other drives work on the primary channel, eg: a CD drive?

Look at your motherboard instructions. It may need to be set to "Auto" in the BIOS settings for IDE channels.

Did you try Drive Fittness Test from my link (above). That should tell you if the drive is faulty.(It may be able to see the drive even though the BIOS cannot see it, I have come across that before). They also have a set of installation instructions:

PS Check if the drive might have a Drive Overlay (Disk Manager) on it. You should see it refered to when booting up ( "press the [spacebar?] to boot from floppy ").
