    NVIDIA Crash

My Packard Bell computer - OS XP Home, 80g HDD, 512 RAM (which I bought over a year ago and installed relevant updates when prompted to do so) is performing perfectly, but my nvidia desktop manager (which came preinstalled with the computer) has crashed. I was previously prompted to install an update for this software on 15 November 2003. I'm guessing that there was something wrong with this update.

I contacted the NVIDIA website for guidance but I was redirected to the computer’s manufacturer. The specific problem is:

    "NVWDDI.DLL nView Critical Error." and
"NVCPL.DLL nView experienced a Critical Error."

I cannot access the application at all and all my previous settings have been erased.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

    Grateful thanks in advance,
    H.

Hi, Maybe use a startup manager to remove Nview loading at
startup - it is not really necessary OR
run the CD setup program again ?
    regards

Try rolling the drivers back to the ones you used previous to the driver "upgrade." Right click on My Computer, go to the Hardware tab, then Device Manager button.

Expand the list of Display Adapters by clicking on the plus sign to the left of "Display Adpaters." Double click on the entry there. Go to the Drivers tab and click on Roll Back Driver.

If you got the driver update from the Windows update site, now you know why it's recommended that driver updates be gotten from the web site of the component's manufacturer and not from Microsoft. ;)

Too true Miz; I suppose it’s laziness, or being too busy that makes it easier to accept downloads via Microsoft rather than checking out updates myself, but lesson learned - I think I’ll hunt for updates to non Microsoft app’s myself in future.

As the desktop manager provides drivers for displaying the desktop, if it does not work properly some functionality is compromised or lost.

As I got your message Miz, late in the day, I’ll roll back the Display Adapter Driver first thing in the morning.

The previous afternoon I tried removing this application and it’s drivers from the Widows "Add or Remove Programsâ€, facility thinking that this might allow me to wind back to its previous configuration.

I uninstalled the NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers update from the computer via Widows "Add or Remove Programsâ€, but the computer was unstable after it restarted, changing some settings and presenting a basic minimum display; - Not good. So I rolled the computer back to its last relatively stable and much more functional configuration with the faulty display manager still there. I perused NVIDIA’s homepage and found the download for the same display drivers package. This is exactly the same version. I wonder if reinstalling Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers update over the top of the present one will iron out the gremlins. What do you think?

Any way, the first thing I’ll do tomorrow is what you suggested and "Go to the Drivers tab and click on Roll Back Driver."

Thank you both so much for your help, this WindowsBBS.com site has, through the input of members, helped me out with so many other problems before.
