I'm running Win XP sp1 on an NTFS hard drive.

Is there anyway I can restrict what hard drives a user can access.

eg I have 8 partitions from c - j, I want the other user to only be able to acess c, d e, and f.

Does anyone know of a way to do this without using third-party software. The thing is, I could hide the drives using x-setup, but for me to access the drives, I'd then have to enable the drives n the program, and restart the computer. That seems like too much hassle to me.

Thanks for all your help folks.

Great. Dead easy with the Pro version.

To deny them any access to G: open windows explorer then right-click on G: and left click on the Properties tab. Security tab and delete any users except yourself. Done deed.

Note: DO NOT leave the users and click on any of the deny blocks. Tain't safe. Just remove their accounts altogether.

Note2: Be sure not to remove yourself. Or be safe and create another account that you don't plan to use often but can in an emergency. Add that account to the Administrator group (right-click My
Computer, left-click Manage then local users and groups) and then add it to security for the drive.

Do the same for any drives you don't want others to be able to access.

Added safety feature for the drives you want others to be able to use - place all their user accounts in the Users group and remove them from any others. That way no one but you will have permissions adequate to do any serious system tweaking so no one can accidently trash the PC. Do note that this will prevent them from installing new apps though so you'll have to do that if it's needed.

Once again thanks for replying. The problem is when I go into the properties, I don't have a security tab. The only ones visible are General, Tools, Hardware, Sharing and Quota.

Do you know if I need to enable access to the tab.

Just a point, the securty tab isn't ghosted or anything, it's just not there.

Glad you found the fix and thanks for posting it. That's one I'd never noticed since I'm on a domain at work and did away with 'simple file sharing' when I first loaded XP at home.

XP-home users have it a little tougher since they don't have to option for anything other than Simple File Sharing and can only see their security options by booting up in safe mode and logging on with an admin account.

As to the pint - I'm headed over your way either next year or (if my job situation takes a little longer to settle down) in 2005 so maybe I can take you up on the offer. :D As you may be able to gather from my avatar pic and my signature, I fish and the UK trip is gonna involve lots of fishing so if you live near a likely lake or river, .....

Well i live in Belfast near the river lagan... I think there's salmon in it, but a word of warning, if you catch any fish in the lagan DON'T eat them. It ain't known for being the cleanest river.

Wife worked a couple of years up your way (but before we met). She may well want to revisit. Not even sure exactly where. She spent the time at a hospital getting a database product she supported up and running for them then back to the US.

I'm too darn lazy to clean the fish I catch so they all go back in the water to swim away (except a few small ones that become cut bait). If I want to eat fish, I normally go where they server them or in a real crisis, buy some at a fish market.
