This is an issue that will eventually hit all who browse here.

*** When will MS terminate support of WinME? ***

In the past I have resuscitated and put some life into old machines (e.g., Win95, Pentium 1, 16MB ram) by just reinstalling the original operating system and rounding it out with modern lightweight apps (eg Opera for both browsing and email, AbiWord, etc.). The mess was moving from IE 4 to IE 5.5 (6 was out of the question!!) so MS would talk to me online at all. I had to scavenge old magazine insert CDs and then cruise the net for the few missing bits required for Opera. All went fine, but it took some trying.

I'd rather avoid such a mess.
I want to allow my WinME comp to have
a long and productive old age without going
    the OS upgrade route.

To do so I'd like to collect all the updates
    up to the cutoff date,
as to be able to apply them to a fresh install if needs be.

This will be necessary after ME gets barred from Windows Update.

Ideally, I'd love to put together a 1-CD collection of all updates.

    - Is it possible?

    - How do I go about doing it?

    - Is there a good howto somewhere?

    TIA for any hints!

    Hello Filippo!

As You can see on Windows Desktop Product Life Cycle Support and Availability Policies for Consumers , You´ve got until 31 December 2004 on WinME.

To put together a CD collection of updates, the following procedure may work for You:

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and take notes of the updates that have been installed. Only those that are possible to uninstall are on that "list ".

Connect to Windows Update Catalog > Find Updates > choose WinME and language > Search

This should bring a number of updates to choose for download. Find the ones according to Your notes and add them to the download basket.

You don´t need all cumulative patches for IE, only the last one.

There might be updates which can not be uninstalled and in consequence not on Your list. How to identify them might be difficult.

When all of them are there > Go To Download Basket > Browse for a download location on Your HDD > Download

This method applies to all OS's.

Remember to add each subsequent update, released after this procedure, to Your collection.

    HTH,
    Christer

    Welshjim,
I believe that this site deals with Internet Explorer only.

Is there a corresponding site for Windows OS's, other than the one to which I provided a link?

I didn't know that - hence my similar postings for WinME and Win98!

For about 3.5 seconds I even thought Christer had been rude in closing my other thread....

    Thank you!

    Filippo,

I agree that such action would have been rude ...... ;) ...... since I´m not a moderator holding such privileges!

My comment was in order to avoid posting a similar response in the Win98 forum.

    Regards,
    Christer

    Hey Christer,

*There might be updates which can not be uninstalled and in consequence not on Your list. How to identify them might be difficult.*

I think you forgot, there is an option on the regular (on the fly) update site to list/print your download history.

    Hi Charles!

Never thought of that possibility. I always download so my history at the "on the fly" site is pretty empty.

    Hi Christer,

Actually, for the sake of accuracy, its "installation" history on the install only site and "download" history on the catalog site.

    Filippo,
I was using AIDA32 yesterday to find information on my system. I stumbled upon "Software" > "Installed Programs" and there´s a list of everything that has ever been installed. I believe that every update is listed, from wherever it came.

You can download AIDA32 from WebAttack.com, it´s freeware.

Belarc will do the same http://www.belarc.com/Download.html

    I have a "fetish" about cross-checking :)

    Hi Charles!

That little program is now safely tucked away in my "Downloaded Programs folder ". Tucked away ? You ask. Well, I´ve downloaded quite a few useful programs now and I´m not using them because I can´t find them ...... ...... I´ve got to get that folder organized ...... ......

    Hi Christer,

A question of listing hotfixes/MS patches came up in this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?threadid=24828

What I found is that Belarc does not list all of MS's patches, just the critical ones. I'm going to go thru the execise with Aida later today.

    Hi Charles!

I didn´t cross check AIDA32's list with my own "updates library" but I did a quick count and came to the conclusion that all updates with one exception, are listed. The exception is the cumulative patches for IE which are represented only by the latest one.

I have not yet installed and tried Belarc.

    Regards,
    Christer

In AIDA32, there´s also a list in Software > Windows Update.

It´s strange how I managed to miss it the first time ...... ...... maybe I didn´t expect to find the information in two places ...... :D ...... well, that´s my excuse, anyway.

    Hi Christer,

I take that back, was looking at a list 6 months out of date. Belarc lists them all, matches my stored MS patch folder plus the one I did a download/install for. It lists the qfecheck command line hot fix checker as Q324720 as well(??).

So in this category, Belarc (latest version) wins over aida32 - latest version.

Aida lists only the hotfixes, while qfecheck, MS's checker lists only hotfixes excluding IE and Media patches.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles!

I´ve not yet checked out Belarc but I will soon since Your comments are in favour of it.

    Thanks,
    Christer
