Question about floppy drive repair.

Hello:

My daughter removed a floppy from her computer and left the metal bracket (for lack of another word), from the leading edge of the disk, behind. I am unable to reach it through the door on the front of the tower, as the front edge is curled up and gets caught on the "ceiling" inside the drive.

Here's my question......Is it possible to take the drive apart to access the inside of it? I'm not real familiar with the inside of a computer, but I have replaced memory, audio cards, etc., so I know how to get inside. I'm assuming I will have to remove the drive from the computer to get inside of it, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions before I start.

By the way, I have no problem taking it to a pro, but if this is something fairly easy to do, without a huge risk of damaging it, I'm game to try.

 

Hmmm. I've never really tried to take one apart or even looked close enough at one to see how they come apart. Having said that, If you've exhausted all avenues for retrieving it, I'd take the drive out and have a look. If you can take it apart, I say go for it. Even if you were to trash the drive it's not really a big deal. You can buy a new one at Newegg for 6-9 US dollars. In my opinion it's not worth taking it to somebody else to have it fixed. It'll cost more than it's worth.

 

Thanks for the help.....as it turned out, once I removed it from the computer, I was able to remove the bracket without having to get inside the drive. I doubt that I could have gotten into it anyway, as it was riveted closed.
