The only recent s/w change was to add Mailwasher 3 days earlier, no h/w changes.
The display has reverted back to 16-color 640x480 screen and resetting it to high-color 800x600, restart, doesn't take.
The mouse stopped working at the same time, device manager says to reload "vmouse.vxd" off the windows CD. But it won't "browse" to the windows CD for the driver. The "hardware information database" update freezes when i autosearch for a driver, or if i delete the mouse and restart to auto-detect it.
    I'm at about the end of it's rope . . .

Hi RexB- Go to this site- http://www.techsupportforum.com/computer/topic/2887-1.html
A few people there had the same problem and found a fix. It seems that it boils down to a corrupted system.ini file and gives some instructions on how to extract the mouse.vxd file from the cabs. Good luck! Clydeo22
