    I noticed recently a unique thing about data CD's. When you elect to sort by file type, Win XP gives you the application name (e.g. 'Adobe Acrobat Document') then followed by all the pdf files. Is there a way to get Win XP to do that with files that are on the HDD? Sort by file type is my preferred view and I have set all my folders to look that way. It would be nice if I could get the App name to apear. Thanks.

    From WE click View, then choose details. Then click the views icon and tick details, (bottom of the list). It alphabetizes your files by file type. I always include "size" on the screen, too, so I can find what I'm looking for at a glance.

    Hi spiper!

    On my XP Pro system, it doesn´t work like Johanna says but maybe I´m just being thick.

    On my system;
    clicking View - Details;
    clicking "View Icon" - Details;
    right-clicking anywhere in the right hand panel - View - Details;
    change the same setting.

    By right-clicking the header bar (Name - Size - Type etc.) I can choose what to display in this folder.

    By clicking an item on the header bar, e.g. "Type ", it gets sorted according to that column and if I click once more the sort order is reversed.

    Anyway, that´s how it works here,

    Under "View" , on the drop down menu, is a "choose details" option. That brings up a dialog box of what details you want displayed. Tick the boxes that you prefer. Then, from the views icon, you can choose thumbs, details, list etc... The rest of Christer's post descibes the behavior I have for WE, too.

    Christer- maybe I didn't explain myself well, or our comps are different because yours speaks Swedish? :)

    Hi thanks for ths information thus far.

    Let me add a little clarification. I'm not talking about the columns in the view. It's more like catagorizations. On screen it looks something like this.

    Adobe Acrobat Document

    File 1.pdf
    File 2.pdf
    File n.pdf

    Microsoft Excel Document

    File 1.xls
    File 2.xls
    File n.xls

    and out to the right of the file names (since I use the details view) are all the details as expected.

    Thanks.

    Johanna,
    from Your first post:

    I misread that as to choose the option to view "all file details ".

    Two positions below on the drop down menu, I have found an option to "select which columns to display" (translated from swedish).

    I´m seriously considering an english version when it´s time for the next OS!

    Christer,
    Your English is excellent. I work with American teenagers who don't have the grammar or spelling skills you do. When I re-read my first post I could see where the confusion was because I didn't use quotes on "choose details ".

    Spiper:
    Under the "choose details" in View is a choice for "arrange icons by type ". Tick "type ". I like mine set just as you described (grouped by file type, not alpha order) Hope this answers your question, and if it doesn't. post back.

    From the Explorer menu: View > Arrange Icons by and make sure Show in Groups is ticked, while Arrange Icons by Type is selected too.

    Clarification

    If you tick "Show in Groups" then you get headers for each file type. If you just tick "Types" you get a long list without the spacer headers. More fits on the page. I'm lazy, and I don't have a scroll button anymore...

    Ah Ha - Show in Groups... I've been using XP for 7 months and never noticed that little item. Very nice (I love it when it's easy )

    Thanks!
