Restart in MS DOS Mode

Hi All.
What are the possible reasons this does not work ?
All I get on this PC is a dead, black screen.

Thanks John, I remembered this thread (to which I also added
some posts) but could not find it again.
I am still working on the problem. As far as I remember, it's
a reg problem that cleared up when I restored a previous reg.
But, of course, if you do that, other sinister bogies from the past
revisit you. I will post how I get on with a solution.
For the time being, I have created a ERU disk with dossstart.bat
on it, so I can use that. My dosstart.bat is usefull as it allows
me to run scandisk, scanreg and some backups etc in DOS mode.
