    Me again,
Tonight I tried to Install Internet Explorer off a Microsoft CD and it would not accept it, error message popped up. The person I am trying to help is awaiting the delivery of the software to install Windows Xp. My only hope is Xp will over write her Internet Explorer problem with a version of their own. Anyone know for sure which way it will go. She has ordered memory chips to upgrade her memory for the Xp install (at this time I don't know for sure if it matters how big the hard drive is for Xp install)...

    Hi again,

What is the error message you are getting when you try to install IE from the Microsoft disk?

Not trying to spit on xp but, changing from one operating system to another to fix a problem is a little dramatic in my book. She may like xp better tho but I'm curious to know why IE won't reinstall. XP comes with IE6.

If her hard drive is 10+ megs xp will be ok. But you will have to format the hard drive to install xp unless her hard drive is large enough to support both operating systems. Must partition the hard drive to do this tho. All that later, lets get IE running again.

Go to this site: http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm and download Easy Cleaner from Toni Arts. Scroll down the page until you see 'Download Places for Easy Cleaner'. Double click on the http address below to download the file. There are only two options I use with this program and its simple. Also this file is very safe and will not delete anything that is needed. I know, I've used this program for a couple of years now with no problem. Other users feel the same way. This program is good.

Once you have the program, double click on it to install. Follow the simple instructions. Nothing hard to it. If it gives you the option to put a shortcut on the desktop, do so. Once the program is installed double click the shortcut to open and the program will run.

When the program starts, you will see the main window. Click on the 'Unnecessary files' button. You won't have to do anything here but click the 'Find' button. If you have never used this program it will probably find a lot of files. Don't let it scare you. These file are safe to delete. Click on the 'Select All' button on the bottom row. Next click 'Delete'. Now that the trash is gone....

Click on the 'Close' button to return to the main window. Click on the 'Clean registry' button. Nothing to do here but click on the 'Find' button. Again, when it has finished click on the 'Select All' button then the 'Delete' button. Its safe. There are other programs that do a better job but you need to watch what you delete with them. This is the safest one I've come across.

Next, click close to get to the main window, then click close again. You are through. Now restart your computer and try to install IE from the disk you got from Microsoft.

I do want to know what the error message is that you are getting.

    Hi,
At the moment I do not recall the error messages but in the message it does say this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. When you click to close or click to x out, it returns the screen back to the main desk top screen. You can not access the Internet "at all "...So any effort to go to any web sites such as the one you suggested is impossible at this time. I considered trying to extract a file from Windows 98 SE even thou I never done so before. I also considerd doing an Fdisk/Format. While I entertained those thoughts I was able to get my hands on a CD with Internet Explorer 6 on it (from Microsoft that a friend had) but the same error message comes up and now she oredered and received the Windows Xp kit. I am concerened and having slight difficulty finding out if, Windows Xp Internet Explorer will download it's version over this problematic one ? Something tells me, there will be issues. I will not be able to install (if thats possible), untill maybe Wednesday or some day after that. Any help you can provide continues to be greatly appreciated...Cheers

Which Windows cd version do you have on disk? Which version is on the computer?

    Howdy,
The version on the computer is Windows 98 SE, when I first went to try and extract, the version I had was first edition and it would not accept it (said it was an earlier version than what was installed). I was able to get my hands on a second edition but because I was not sure on what to put in the removal and destination box I did not make any further attempts. So I tried to just re-install Internet Explorer (by using a CD since access to the Internet is impossible)and that failed as well. I also can not gain access to Outlook Express...

Internet Explorer and Outlook pretty much go hand in hand. When one won't work, neither will the other.

A reinstall can be touchy. Place the Win98 SE disk in the cd rom.

Put the boot disk (floppy) in the floppy drive.

Restart the computer. Let the floppy boot to the blue setup screen.

When you get to this screen, press enter to reinstall.

When setup asks which folder you want to store the files in, make sure you choose the same folder Windows is in now, ie, C:\Windows.

Setup will reinstall Windows. It will look like you're setting up Windows for the first time, but you're not. Its a reinstall. You will not lose anything that is on your computer now, but this reinstall will replace all the files that are now missing, ie, Internet Explorer, and anything else.

Just follow the on screen instructions and all will be well. Should be, anyway.

After the reinstall, you will probably need to go to Windows Update and update your files. Let update scan your computer and it will let you know which updates, if any, are needed.

And if you don't have them, I'd download Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware, and EasyCleaner. And if you need a good, free antivirus, go to www.grisoft.com and get the free AVG. Its good, I use it, and its free for personal use.

Let me know how it goes.....

Just a thought to throw in. I have had in the past gotten the 'error......needs to close' message when trying to go to some websites. Could it be that IE is erring just trying to load the current homepage? Try setting homepage to blank just for kicks. If it loads, try going somewhere else.....say msn.com or windows update or where ever.

    Hi,
I can set the home page to none but it's impossible to go into the internet. Once the eror message is closed out or x-out, the internet page closes out and returns to the desk top screen every time...

    Hi again,

    Did you try the reinstall?

Also, the next time you see the error message, click on the Details button and post what it says.

If you just want to go with xp, then format the drive and install xp. Internet Explorer comes with xp and will be installed also.

    Hi noahdfear,

We got a stubborn problem here and thanks for the input.

    Iexplore (upper left corner)

    In the error message box:

    Clicked on details;
Iexplore caused an invalid page fault, module unknown

Furhter down in the detail box it refrences something about stack dumps...

    Hi,
Here's the latest...I doubt I will get the chance to fix that persons Outlook Express problem with the dll site you gave me. She ordered two memory chips (128 MB ea), a new hard drive (80 GB)and Windows Xp Pro. For some reason before she called me to help her, she tried unsuccesfully to get Microsoft and Dell to help her. Because it took me awhile to figure out her latest problem (thanks to your help), she has entertained the thought of a tech that works for the town we live in to install the items I mentioned. So I have washed my hands with this person and wanted to atleast that thank you for all your help. Too many other computers in the area I live to worry about one...Cheers
