    I'm using Win98SE, IE6.0
Sometimes I need to go to Safe Mode. When I restart computer afterwards, my icons on desktop are all over the space.
There is a way to lock the icons to remain in the preferred position before the Safe Mode use. I don't recalll how to lock them so that they will be where I want them.
If there is a way to do that, and some time in the future, can I still right-click an icon and drag it to a new place on desktop, and select "Move here" ?

There is a program (probably more than one) that will "remember" how your desktop looks and will restore it.

I don't remember the name of it but I'm sure it was mentioned on this BBS.

Try a search here or on google.

    KevinSaul,
    Search couldn't help me.
Does anyone have any other ideas?? Or will I just have to move icons around to my liking each time I am in Safe Mode?

Try this web page. It's simple, free and works great.
    http://www.nthelp.com/50/save_desktop_layout.htm

Oops! I forgot I was in the win98 forum so this won't work as is. There is no system32 folder in 98. I used to have something similar for 98 but don't remember what it was called. Maybe I'll have to dig the old puter out and see what it was.

OK. I rebooted to win98 and tried this layout.dll on it and it worked fine. Just copy the dll to windows\system instead of windows\system32. Turns out I was wrong about the system32 folder though. There is one in win98. Guess it's one of those that I never dug into during my 98 days. :)

    Zander,
Thanks for the effort. I downloaded the layout.dll and installed it in the windows/system32 folder. Then Re-started my computer. While in Safe Mode, I did a ScanDisk. Then restarted agailn, to check out whether your tip worked.
Sorry top say, it didn't. My icons are scattered, just like they were before this layout.dll was installed.
    So, back to "square-1 "

    Try this:

    http://www.sillysot.com/ "Iconoid "

It's freeware. I use it for the transparent background icon effect but it does have a tab for remembering and resetting icon positions. You'll have to set this and try it out yourself since I've never had occasion to use that particular function.

In order for it to work in win98 you have to put it in the windows\system folder instead of windows\system32. If your still interested, give it a try.

    goddez1,
I tired Safe Mode. Then resarted in normal mode.
Half of the icons (on right side of screen) are where they originally were....before Safe Mode and after Safe Mode.
On the right side of screen, again the icon were all lover the screen, and I had to again move them to where I want them.
Therefore, I conclude that iconoid doesn'te help me with my original question.

Zander: I moved layout.dll from system 32 folder to System folder while in Safe Mode. So....with that done, and having iconoid installed. I have the same original problem.

Does iconoid have to be uninstalled for layout.dll in System folder to work?

Perhaps your misunderstanding this. After you put the layout.dll in the system folder you should then run the reg file (layout.reg) that came with the download. Did you run the reg file? After doing this you should arrange the icons the way you want them and then right click on my computer and in the menu choose "save desktop layout" . After doing this, if you should play a game or do something else that messes up the icon arrangement, right click on my computer and choose "restore destop layout" from the menu and the icons should all go back to where you had placed them before you saved the layout. You can test it by arranging the icons, saving the layout, move a few of them around and then restore the layout.

    I gave it a shot.

I still like the transparent background effect on my desktop icons and have found the Iconoid utility handy and with less bugs than others I had tried.

Never used many of the other functions. Icon positon being one of these. Although out of curiosity I did check it out and did the safemode boot test. Even threw the icons around, willy nilly, to further test the function. It worked like a champ. Perhaps there is a limitation to the amount of icons it will remember. I only have a few as I prefer an uncluttered desktop and use the quicklaunch bar for all other shortcuts.

Any who......I am glad Zanders suggestion worked for ya'. :D
