    Hi

    Problem with 98SE:

    1. Choosing "Restart" will not restart the computer, remains at the Windows 98 splash screen the computer must be switched off eventually.
    2. Choosing "Shutdown" does the same as in 1. above, however on switching on the computer the scandisk does not run the machine starts normally.

I have installed the MS patch which is supposed to correct the problem a known phenomenon with the OS, but has not solved the situation. I have also run the Registry First Aid software, still no solution. I do not know how to correct the problem ( I suspect a windows protection error) any solution forthcoming would be much appreciated.

Look in the C:\Windows\Command ( I think that is where it is ) and see if there is a file named SCNDSK.ALT

The name I wrote may not be correct but the .ALT extention is.

Delete it and then do your thing about shutting down.

Searched HD (Find/Show all files) for SCNDSK.* and *.ALT no file was found. Still need a solution.

I have just read Hawk22 posting on the BBS I have the same situation at shut down viz. " Windows Protection error you need to restart your computer ...... Press any Key" the difference is after pressing any key the message appears "It is now safe to switch off your computer "

At start-up only the Computer Assoc. antivirus prgm. and the firewall Zone Alarm are loaded. I also use Start up Cop (an excellent utility prgm) to control start up loads.

In your first post you say "I suspect a windows protection error" and in your last post you say "I have the same situation" and quote some of a previous thread as if to confirm your suspicions.

Many have the "same situation" but for a multiple of different reasons. It is almost a black art to determine what the specific reason is if, indeed, only one exists on a particular set up.

I had a shutdown problem for years and applied all known solutions, including the MS patch, to no avail. It was only when I ripped out Power Management that the problem ceased, never to return until I installed Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. The disc activity on exiting this app went on for ages rendering the MS patch useless. I turned all logging off, available in latest update, and increased the cachewritedelay to 10 seconds; the MS patch uses 2 seconds. New shutdown problem now gone.

My first port of call would be to rip out Power Management. It makes sense for a lot of electrical appliances but not computers.

My second port of call would be to try a run of shutdowns without Zone Alarm running or exit Zone Alarm before restarting/shutting down and see if that helps. If it does then increase cachwritedelay.

    Leopard hi,

This might be not everyones cup of tea, but just like gammepsilon mentions I also use Sygate Firewall and it did play up from time to time so I am always shutting down Sygate before I shut down the PC.
But I am also using a program called Quick Shutdown, I find it works great with my setup, but then it is not everyones cup of tea to use a third party shut down program.
Also I have shut down Power Management.

    good luck

I disabled the Zone Alarm software from start-up by way of start up cop utility, but this did not solve the problem, so by process of elimination this was not the problem. The other suggestion of increasing the cachewritedelay, I did not do so, simply because I have not done the procedure before and do not know how to do this task. Will one of you please explain to me the procedure for accomplishing this task.

    Win 98 Restart/Shutdown Solved

Thanks to all those who replied with possible solutions to the problem, but it has now been solved (purely by accident). Connected to my PC is an external AOpen CD/RW unit, which experienced power failure with the result that the PC did not see the unit, a restart suddenly worked correctly, trying the shut-down this also worked perfectly (no windows protection error)

Reinstating the power connection to the CD drive unit the old restart/shutdown problem was there again. To substantiate that this was the cause of the problem I deliberately switched off the power to the CD external drive unit, and again the restart/shudown worked correctly. The conclusion: the software supplied by the manufacturer caused incompatibilty problems with the Win 98 OS

Getting over a restart/shutdown problem is not unlike getting over an illness. Admittedly a weak analogy but I'm sure a lot of folk here will forgive my use of it.

We had n reasons for the phenomenon: We now have n plus one. Not quite never ending but it is working on it.
