I need to clean up my C drive. It is partitioned at 2 gig. I have most of my programs installed on other drives.
When I upgraded to 2000 I converted the drive to NTFS form FAT 32. the drive is now full. I also noticed the Windows folder is very large, over 1.2 gig.
I suspect there are files in the windows folder I can delet but do not know what is expendable.
Any suggestion on how to clean out the folder or where to find information?
    Thanks

Delete *.dmp, *.chk, *.log, *.bak. That should start you off, obviously move files to a safe place for a few days first to make sure they're safe to delete.

The dmp files may be large as they are created when an app crashes.

If you've installed any service packs or hotfixes you could move their uninstall information to a CD and move it back if you want to remove a hotfix.

    Check C:\documents and settings\usernamezlocal settings\temp too.

That should be ebough for a while. And upgrade your C drive :D

You could also change the path for your temp and tmp variables to one of your other partitions. Make the change for both system and user variables. By moving them off your C drive it could help keep some free space.

To make that change go to System properties and click the Advanced Tab and them click Environment Variables and Edit the variables.

You could also move the Virtual Memory from your C drive (if its there now) and assign it to one of your other partitions, that could help free up some space.

To make that change go to System properties and click Performance Options. Then Change the location from your c drive to one of your other partitions

Win2k is a hog when it comes to HDD space. If you install 2k + all the service packs (like I have done on my computers) you end up with over 1 GB in the WINNT directory. Since you upgraded it might take even more space.

Does changing a drive from FAT32 to NTFS change the cluster size? I can't remember....
