Hi bigsox- Actually, I found this post on another bulletin board and it explains a little more than the Microsoft post and convinced me to try the fix.
    http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/39495.html
I did the renaming from a command prompt after starting up with a boot disk. Thanks Lonny for trying to clarify my post. Clydeo22

    ok, few things..

i tried to uninstall IE6 and as the operation was in the process of reverting back to IE5.5 it stopped and i recieved a message that 'IE6 unistallation failed'... arg...

then i booted from a floppy and entered the commands... like you both mentioned, the first command rendered no result as well the command deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.* ... the rest of the commands seemed to do their job..

after i rebooted i tried to find those files, only problem was my search function didnt work.. so i tried to go into my c: through 'my computer' and when i opened it up there was just nothing,, no icons... i booted again, same thing... then i rebooted in normal mode and tried to access windowsbbs.com,, it wouldnt let me access the page.. it also wouldnt let me access google, or hotmail, and some other random pages,, but many different ones did work.. i then tried to go to microsoftupdates and it let me go there, but wouldnt let me access the 'scan for updates' page... so i rebooted in safe mode and ran scan disc...

as for where im at now,, i am in hour 10 out approx. 30 of scandisc... i only have about 6gigs on my comp,, but on a 100 gig disc.. so i guess i wont be posting results till then..

wow,, things still aint lookin up,, but im still greatful for all your help...

so i entered all those commands in dos then i rebooted and ran scandisc,, scandisc found no errors and when i rebooted, alotta things were messed up.. where to begin,, pretty much any folder created by windows (like 'my pictures' or 'my recieved files') wont open, when i go to my C: theres nothing there, just a blank folder.. i cant use the find function. IE doesnt work really, it will load SOME of the pages in my favorites, but most of the hyperlinks on those pages dont work,,, all programs that i have installed (like msn messenger, photoshop and my burning program) operate fine.. any suggestions?? i have backed up all my important files, so im not worried about losing information, i just want a stable operating system...

    thanks team..

Sorry about the standard spiel about using scandisk and defrag
usually thats a suggestion made by techs to trouble shoot almost anything ,, but it was needed
The problems I think are an Internet explorer issue,So now i forget what version is installed,, go help about on IE's toolbar ?

    But first >
    Can you search ?
Go ,start, and search for a file called Wininit.ini there are others don't touch them.. You can or could open it with notepad
if you like and copy paste here for us ?right click on it choose open with notepad
    "Wininit.ini "
    You may not find it.
programs use this when installing ,so they are able to complete when the PC is restarted, if something go's wrong or perhaps two or more programs complicate matters by writing to this file , well things can go haywire.
Did you cleanup with SpyBot yet ? its free or a no nags contribureware program

i agree, i think its most definitly a problem with IE.. when i was installing Word, the process demanded i install IE6, so i did.. recently i tried to uninstall IE6, which can be found in my add/remove window.. when the uninstall is finished a window reads "internet explorer 6 failed to uninstall... when i rebooted again and clicked on my IE icon a window asked me if i would like to make IE 5.5 my default browswer... therefore i may be caught inbetween versions.. when i select 'about' from my IE help menu the window doesnt reveal what version it is,, it just says

    VERSION:

    thats it,, weird...

as for wininit.ini a while back when i was trying to install total recorder i renamed it ti wininit.old and nothing changed,, my search function does not work, but through my burning program i am able to browse my files and i found wininit.old near wininit.log, wininit.exe, wininit.bak, and wininit.err.. do you still want me to copy and past the contents of wininit.old??

No but wininit.err would be interesting ?

    Try Mark62's suggestion
Can you get to control panel ? and these others ?
(If not close all programs or just start in safe mode and find and run ie6setup.exe)
first delete the contens of C:\WUTemp not the folder itself
its hidded so with folder options make windows show all hidden .

Before trying this next part go into control panel addremove and start the uninstall of ms ie and see if it will let you choose
add a component ,, did it work ? if so cancel out and >
then delete C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files
the folder itself there could also be one under
    C:\Windows Update Setup Files
You'l now its the right one if inside there's a text file saying this folder is safe to delete

then back to addremove/IE's add a component >
"When you install IE 6 again, do the Custom Install, click on the Advanced tab, and select to Download Files to Run Setup Later.
After the download is complete you will need to run the Ie6setup.Exe file again to do the install.
This way, in the future, you do not need to be connected to the internet to reinstall IE, and go through the long download time if you are on dial up. "
do it when in safe mode to be carefull the install not the download. Gee :)

    ok, here i go again..

i cant get into my control pannel, nor can i do searches,, the only way i can browse my files is through some program like running notepad and selecting 'open',,, when i tried to uninstall IE6 i WAS given the option to add a component.. however, i dont have Ie6setup.exe because it was most likely on the word disc,, which i gave back to my roomate,,,

i could not find C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files
nor could i find C:\Windows Update Setup Files

i just downoaded ie6setup.exe from microsoft.com.. even though i cant find those windows, should i follow your reinstallation instructions with this downloaded file??

and heres the contents of the .ERR file,, there were entries regarding MSHTML.dll which i remember being involved in my problem... sorry its long..

This could explain a bunch here, as this IE6 may have been the bug filled first version. IE6 SP1 is the one you want to install, the one you downloaded.

The contents of the ERR file says that you have done a System Restore at some point in the past, and it went badly. However, this line below rings some alarms with me.
    ERROR: DELETE_FILE C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\~VIS0000\GAIN_3~1.EXE C:\_RESTORE\TEMP\GAIN_3~1.0 0x0
You have or had Gator installed at one point. This little nasty adware program could have done you in from the start.

I would recommend getting SpyBot Search & Destroy. After installing, have it update first, then Search for Problems. Remove everything already checked in red. You may have some items in green and black, don't worry about these. If Spybots asks to be run a next bootup, allow and reboot

" "i just downoaded ie6setup.exe from microsoft.com.. even though i cant find those windows, should i follow your reinstallation instructions with this downloaded file??" "

If I understand correctly that would just be the first of it
after selecting advanced and download only it will create a folder
Windows Update Setup Files ,, within which later youl have to click on ie6 setup to start the install,,,, but do this from safe mode

anyway the total size here on this machine of that folder is

    23 objects and 13.2 mb

Go ahead and download the whole thing ,before installing do one more thing,, if possible ,navigate to and delete the contents of
    this hidden folder
(you dont need it need it anymore and it gets in the way),
,sometimes even cousing almost the same symtoms well install hangups and such.
this is only for win ME as far as I know,,
    C:\Program Files\Uninstall Information
delete the contents not the folder itself
    Good spot Mark
    let us know
    Lonny

I usualy dont know if my pc problems are coused by me or win me
    or software
dont forget to install SpyBot S&D and adaware
and update them from within the programs before each scanning

first i installed spybot, ran the updates and ran the search and destroy, got rid of a few spys that were lurking around... i thought ad-aware did it all, but i was wrong,, so now i will run both often... then i ran ie6setup.exe and selected 'download only' and after that was done i found the folder "C:\Program Files\Uninstall Information" and i deleted its contents.. i then rebooted in safe mode and ran ie6setup.exe from the update folder and rebooted in normal mode and all was well.. i think i will run defrag and set a restore point then lay low for a while... if you have any other suggestions, im all eyes.. thanks... sleep calls..

    Just a couple for now
disable system restore ,, it will promt to restart
    once restarted enable it again
(Just incase) right click on the my computer icon ,choose properties, then performance, file system,, troubleshooting
    [x] disable sys-restore

anyway when we re-enable it will make one auto restore point
be sure to always let windows restart when prompted or even when it suggests it
    Good luck

    bigsox Hi

    Hum thats strange
right click on the my computer icon ,choose properties, then performance, file system

set the size for windows to use to about half or more (exit that screen)
then try creating a manual restore point,,

double left click on the my computer, highlight your hard drive
how much free space ? and how much is used ?
"and it wouldn't allow me to... "
we need the whole message ?

Also check to see if windows has created a auto restore point
Open system restore and go to restore my PC da da da look at the calendar are there any listed..? then cancel out

O and I forget , have you gotten all updates from windows update ?
don't use the third party updates unless your sure they are installed and needed,, basically don't get them unless your having problems with them.

Anyone else have any ideas ?

    Lonny

That folder and a few files in it may be corrupted.
    You may to get out the boot floppy again. With the System Restore disabled, boot with the floppy and do this command at the prompt;
    deltree c:\_restore
Then boot up ME, and then see if you can enable System Restore and verify a restore point was created.
