Exploring XP Folder Settings options I inadvertently set "find" as the default action when opening "Drive" icons in "My Computer ". I can't figure out how to reset it back to "open ". Any advice?

Thanks for the quick reply. I must not be describing this appropriately. Prior to changing the default action on DRIVE Icons, left clicking to open works like any other folder open; the contents of the file is displayed. A right click on the Icon shows OPEN in bold and at the top of the list.

What I get now left clicking a drive Icon is a SEARCH window. A right click on the Icon shows SEARCH in bold (the default) with open second in the list.

What I believe I did in the Folder Options window: file types, DRIVE, Advanced, select FIND, select default; caused the change in characteristics.

Regardless of what I may have done, I want to get back to the standard operating characteristic of opening files.

This is only on "DRIVES ". Folders still open normally.

Is the default action for drive now a BOLDED Find.

If so unbold it. Just click on the word find [to highlight it] and click on the button that says "make default ", hit the okays and that should do it.

In effect "reverse what you did ".

    It should have.........

    Just for re-enforcement:

*Double click on the My Computer icon located on desktop.
*Click on the top menubar button entitled "View ".
*Scroll down to and click on "Folder Options ".
*From popup Click on the "File Types" tab.
*Scroll down the list to the file type named "Drive ".
    *Double click on it.
*Click once on the action word find so it is highlighted.
*Click on the button on the bottom right that say's "Make Default "
*Click on the button that says "Close" to exit this box.
*Click on the button that says "close" to exit the file types popup.

    ========
I know you probably did this but the fact that it should have worked has me mystified and scratchin' my head.

    Ann, Thanks for the attention......
Here is what I see following your procedure:
My Computer: Lists all the drives (among other things)
View: No "Folder Options "; Need to go to "Tools" to get folder options.
    File Types: Normal
Double click on DRIVES: no action, must click on the advanced button.
    Highlight "Find ", select default...etc.

    Result is no change.

Maybe a re-install of XP is what I need to do. And then keep my curiosity in check.
    Thanks.

    It IS a mystery!

Nahh, don't reinstall for such a minor glitch. Let's try something slightly different.

What have you got listed as the default for this key in the registry:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DRIVE\SHELL

Don't do anything yet this is exploritory.

Are you familiar with regedit and the safeties when using it?

I also looked at Root: Folders: Shell: data = open

Folders open in the standard way.

Is it as simple as changing Drive: Data = open?

Got to clear the default:[by setting the value to "none ".]

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q321186

Folders default is "Open" [bolded], that appears to be correct.

"File Folder" on the other hand should also have a cleared default and a nonbolded action of find if viewing via the "file types" tab route.

    ===========
Forgive the instructions for drive default action change. I am on a win98se os at the moment and the XP is at home. I was winging it figureing the xp method wouldn't be that different. Guess that was a wrong assumption.

To complicate things even more, xpregedit seems to force you to do something once you commit to the using the "advanced button ".

    QUOTE:
"This problem occurs when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types. For example, this problem occurs for folders if you complete the following procedure:
Open the folder, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
Click File Folder in the Register file types list, and then click Advanced.
After you perform this procedure, the None setting is removed from the value data for the Default string value in the following registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

NOTE: This problem occurs even if you do not create a new action, edit existing actions, or change the default action in the Edit File Type dialog box. "

    Ann,
Worked perfectly...Thanks a zillion! BBS is my best techie find in 15 years!

I don't want to limit my curiosity but need to be more careful.

I searched the MS bulletins but couldn't find the proper subject to get relevance.

    You're a champ!

Your most welcome and I learned something new to boot. I'd say this was a win-win situation.

    Glad it helped. :D
