How do I correct a "STOP:C0000221 {Bad Image Chechsum} error message that I get when I attempt to Clean Boot XP Pro? Added info: "The header checksum does no match the computer checksum ". The error message appears immediately after the entire install process has run, and it appears on a blue screen. Of course, all of the data on that disk is wiped, but fortunately, I have 2 extra 80gb disks that I "Clone" to on a very regular basis. I use Maxtor's DataLife Utility to reformat and repartition that disk and copy from one of the "Clone Disks ", and I'm back in business fairly quickly.

Even with the problems, I have always been up and running. The reason for the need of a "Clean Boot" is that I have a lot of odd glitches that I run into regularly. Also, the "Program Compatibility" and the "System Restore" features no longer appear in the "All Programs > Accessories > System Tools" menu. I'm thinking "I'll just do a clean boot and solve all of the glitches at one time ". In my dreams!

I believe the cause of the problems is several months ago we had a series of daily thunderstorms march across Tennessee, losing electrical power at least one time each day. On one day we lost power 11 seperate times. I have a surge protector, but maybe it's too cheap a model or just failed and needs replacement.

I would appreciate any help or advice you can give me. I have attempted servera methods to get around the "Bad Image Checksum" error, but with no luck.

    Thanks

Hi - and Welcome to the Board :)

Take a look here and if this is of no direct help do a Google search for STOP:C0000221 - plenty of hits, of which the above is the first.
Suggest your recent power outages have fouled up something on the PC - possibly hardware??

Thanks for the suggestions, You are right about the possibly of damage to hardware. I experienced a slow increase in staying and navigating on-line. My cable modem was damaged and was slowly deteriorating. I replaced it with a Toshiba PCX2500 which is working great.

I have not been able to isolate any further hardware problems, so far, but I am doing everything I can think of or find to test my hardware. I know of a couple of sites I can do more of that for free and will do so.

MS Knowledge Base Article 326687 describes my exact error, but it deals with the problem on upgrade to XP. I was able to EXPAND a new copy of the file "oleayt32.dll" from my XP install disk, but after following the suggested steps, I still got the same error message. I still have a "clean" copy of oleaut32.dll isolated on my compute and will probably attempt that process several more times before I give up on it.

I was also able to obtain a "clean" copy of the oleaut32.dll file at Website http://www.dll.file.com. It seems that they have copies of almost any dll file you might need or want.

I'll check your Google Search suggestions in a few days. I have cataract surgery on Wednesday of this week on my left eye. I won't be able to see out of that eye very well for a couple of days. I hope it goes as well as the surgery on my right eye. I "n still wearing glasses but I took the right lens completely out, don't need it anymore

    Thanks

A couple of years ago, before I got a UPS, my house was hit by lightning. Afterwards, my comp acted goofy, and had a similar error message. An old timer pulled the Mobo out of my comp and sniffed it- yes, you read that right- and we found a spot that was burned. Replaced the board and all was well. I tried to fix that damaged Mobo for 4 months- managed to stay online most of the time, but wasted a lot of time messing with software when I had a hardware problem. I couldn't see the damage to the board by looking, until we found the exact spot that fried. I carried it to my local ISP (who assured me lightning couldn't come through the cable) and they gave me a credit on my bill after I made the techs sniff the board. The UPS has paid for itself since, because this old house and small town electric company have lots of power fluctuations, and the UPS levels everything out. I also use an APX box in between the cable and the modem, now, and I have the telephone routed through there, too. Let it storm!

I am definetly getting a UPS. In looking over my setup, I discovered that all of my cables that plug-in are plugged into my surge protector. However, surprise, surprise, my incoming cable goes directly to my cable modem, then to my computer. This may be part of the source of my problems from power surges.

I'm like you, I'm not ready to give up on fixing the problem. I still plan to find and run as many hardware tests that I can. Possibly I may be able to isolate a hardware problem, if that is what I have. I already have located several sites that test hardware, but have not had the time to use any of them.

Don't know whether anyone is interested, but my cataract surgery on my left eye went great. My vision is improved so much that I will only need reading glasses. Kind of felt poorly for a while but am feeling better now.

Thanks for sharing the information with me. I had not seriously considered that the problem might be hardware.

wmjordansr ... I know just how excited you are as I had both my natural 'fogged' lenses replaced with "array" lenses last year. Fantastic feeling ... I see 100% better 80% of the time (thats the engineer coming out in me, sorry).

Now back to our normal program.......

    Good luck
