 I have Win98SE. A couple of years ago I installed Microsoft Works Suite 2000. I wanted to upgrade, so I bought Works six. It detected works 2000 and would not install until I uninstalled works 2000. I used uninstall and it went half way and stated works was protected by another drive. I only have one. Works 6 shows in programs but won't work. Suite will not uninstall. Both say files are missing. What do I do now?

    Hi piano1
Did you try to remove it through the control panel under add/remove programs?

Secondly, if that's a no go.....what if you re-installed and tried to uninstall again?

    Hi again piano1
Excuse me if I sound nit-picky here. Did you use the add/remove programs from the control panel? Or jsut the one that came with the software?

And you did try to re-install the software once more? And see if that fixed the problem so you could uninstall prperly?

Lastly what error messages are you getting exactly please?

    Daizy

Hi Daizy: It looks like I have finally got Microsoft Suite 2000 uninstalled after several tries using the uninstall program in settings. I again tried to install Microsoft works version 6.0. Now it is really ******* up. The install seemed to be going well until it hit the catalog section. Right in the middle of installing catalog a popup came up stating setup is unable to find the works service file and therefore canceled program. I have the Icon on the desktop, but when I hit it a popup comes stating a required DLL file MSPFCTLO.DLL was not found Have task programs set up. When I was able to open file earlier, the Main subjects were there such as task and types, but they were empty. I am pulling my hair out. It looks like somehow this program is being confused with Works Suite 2000. They are seperate programs. Both were put on with CD's. A 68 year old novice is going nuts. Help Duane:eek:

I have been following this post.

It now appeaars to me as though you may have to do a MANUALL regedit and a find for any entries referring to either program and delete them. You may need to use various search words to get them all.

With some software if it sees any reference to the old ( or even bad install of the new ) it will not allow a proper install.

While editing the reg keep track of the various folders that are referred to. Then after editing the reg reboot the machine and using Windows Explorer find the folder and see if they will delete. If they won't then something in them is still being used by Windows. And you may need to do further editing.

I know this is a real Pain in the Rear end but after a bad install or un-install it may need to be done. If anyone has had to deal with a bad install of McAfee or Norton will know what I am refering too.

After editing and deleting folders, and restarting make sure the Recycle Bin is empty and then DEFRAG the HD before trying a new install.

OH BTW. Did you disable any Anti-Viris checking during the install ? That also at times will mess things up if not disabled.

Sorry that I missed this earlier

    To do a manual regedit.
    1. click start/run type SCANREGW. This will check the reg and make a backup of same. ( rb00x.cab file stored in the C:\windows\sysbckup folder.
    2. Click start/run type REGEDIT
    3. Select File/Find and type in a Word associated with the program in question. Such as suite 2000.
    4. When the search finds one make sure it is referring to the desired program and delete it
    5. After deleting one ref hit F3 and it will go to the nest one.

Be prepaired to tkae a little time because if the programs(s) did not un-install properly there may be quite a few references.

Good luck and be careful that the reference matches the program in question.

Hi again BillyBob: You are the greatest. I did what you said and then reinstalled. Everything is back including their histories. Wow, I am very very pleased. Two things. My Money 2000 program will not hook up with my banks or MSN. It brings up a screen to send a report to microsoft. It is a small thing compared to what was wrong. Oh Yes. I have a ton of stuff in the recycle bin. All connected with the works program. I am afraid to delete them. When they are in there, do they have an effect on programs or is it ok to dump?
Again, my heartfelt thanks. You have made a 68 year old geezer very happy. Duane

From an older ( 2 yrs ) old geezer to the younger old geezer.

    That is GREAT news

And thank you for posting back.

I would keep them for a day or two and if no problems arise DUMP them.
