Try putting the other original 128-stick back too ...... XP will like it!

When you install software, you are usually given a choice where you would like to put it. Sometimes you need to click on "Browse" and navigate to your desired location. XP will know where they are, and put them on your start menu for you.

    Caren,
it would be interesting to hear Your decision on partitioning the internal and the external harddisks. It would make it easier to follow Your thoughts on where to put what!

    Thanks,
    Christer

    Hi everyone,

sorry, I had to take the day off for work. So I haven't started what I fear most: networking.

Christer, here's how I partitioned my disk based on all the good advice I got here and from MS support:

    - Win XP Pro = 6 GB
    - Programs = 10 GB
    - Documents = 12 GB
    - Swap File = 1.5 GB
    - unpartitioned space = 8 MB (thiss just has to be there for Win XP)

    Now the funny part:

    1. I have no idea how to get Win XP to use the Documents partition as the place where it defaults the My Documents folder. Do I move that folder to the right partition and then look for it there everytime I Save As etc? What about the folder lists in applications (like Office) where there is My Documents in the left bar?

    2. Great with the super high tech decision to put the Swap File on a separate partition as wisely suggested by Pete, but what else do I need to do to get Windows to use it as its Swap File? Does power of mind andd meditation suffice?

:) (at least until I get into networking)

    Hi Caren

!. Move My Documents Folder - see here under m = 'My Documents Folder - Move'
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

    2. Right Click My Computer Icon > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change - highlight the drive on which you want the Pagefile (Swap file), click custom size and type in min and max values - these should be the same for a fixed size pagefile, say 1.2 GB (If Windows protests that there is not enough room, make the values slightly smaller). Then highlight C drive and click 'No Page File'. You will need to reboot.

    Caren,
I would recommend moving some more stuff to the same partition as the My documents folder: Address book, E-mail and Favorites.

Then You don´t have to worry about these things in case You need to do a reinstallation or a restore of a Ghost Image.

Scroll down to Effects of Image Restoration on this page and follow the instructions.

    Regards,
    Christer

By the way, are You still on 128 MB RAM only?

Thanks Pete. Do I format the Swap File drive as NFTS or FAT? And what about all the other partitions (I won't be using a different operating system on this PC)?

Christer, it's an excellent idea to move those other files there too. I have to figure out how to tell Windows that they are there. If I have any problems I'll post back.

The 512M memory stick is definitely no go. It works at the computer store where I bought it but not on mine. If I install it on its own, the computer will just not start. So I put back my two old memory sticks until I get a hold of a different brand.

Caren - I would go for NTFS on all partitions.

    NTFS- me, too.

When you are installing the software, always choose "custom" install if it gives you the option. Almost everything will work on a partition separate from the OS, so, when it wants to know where to put things, navigate to the partition you want with the "Browse" button.

I have a folder on my D drive that I download programs to, and then install from there. Periodically, I burn it to a cd. When I need to redo my system, or fix someone else's, all the software is in one place. I copy what I want from the cds to a folder on their computer and install the programs one at a time from their harddrive. Just make sure you make folders for big programs, or your D drive will litter up with unorganized files.

    Caren,

With one exception, I would format all partitions NTFS.

The exception being any possible partition dedicated to Ghost Images because I have had problems with NTFS and Ghost in that respect.
I would format this partition FAT32.

No need to, just click the link I provided and You shall see the light ...... ;) ......

    Folks,

I'm amazed at the level of support provided on this board.

Thank you all... and the installation continues. I feel like I'm installing a space station.
